Reducing and Recycling Garbage Waste

Do you know that in the United States, each person throws 1,400 pounds of garbage a year? And this number was recorded 10 years ago! People now order takeaways, tons of deliveries, online shopping, etc. The number amount of garbage increases every year. Garbage includes all different things, not just plastic, like metal, iron, plastic, food, or toys. Garbage waste looks like an everyday thing, every day, there will be trash outside everyone’s door. But when people zoom in, they will find out that dumping waste is not a small problem, it connects to the bigger environment and society, which connects to United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 13, 14, and 15. These goals are not yet reached, many people now realized the importance of environmental health, but there are still many necessary steps to take things to do to reach the goals. Although many countries have started to take action against garbage and waste, it is still a huge global problem that negatively impacts both the environment and individuals.

Effects on People and Country

The goal to reduce garbage started many years ago, but still did not meet the expectations. The US generates about 180 million tons per year of municipal solid waste in 2000. 1,400 pounds per year per person. Among all the garbage, only 27% was reused or recycled, and about 73% of it is buried. (Garbage Garbage Garbage). In a garbage study, it shows, “The United States buries enough steel, plastic, and aluminum to produce 2 million automobiles, enough wood to build a million homes, enough paper to produce all our newspapers and half a million house trailers’ worth of aluminum. The energy in the waste could produce 30 thousand megawatts of electric power.”(Kreith). In 1978 there were 20,000 landfills where waste could be deposited. By 1988 the number had dropped to 6,000 and by 1993 only 4,000 landfills were left (Kreith). From this evidence, we can see that people buy a lot of products, but before they use them up, it’s thrown in the trash. 73%of the garbage that was buried can be recycled, like metal or paper products. However, people decide to bury everything to reduce the process and cost. Also, we can see that the reduce- garbage plan started years ago but did not make any progress, instead, garbage landfills are increasing.

Figure 2- This graph shows the percentage of total waste and the waste recycled in the United States from 1960 to 2011. Source

To find the causes of why garbage increases every year, many professors investigated peoples’ daily garbage. For example, in the article “Need food, clothes, or a bed? You might find it in New York City’s trash”, the author introduced the university professor, Robin Nagle. She studies garbage around New York. She often rides around on New York City garbage trucks and looks at the things people throw out. She concludes and believes that people in New York throw a lot of things away and many things they throw away can be reused or recycled. However, they just throw them away, and it’s a big waste of resources (Need Food Clothes). Another reason she infers why people throw so much is that houses are too small, so, people toss out things to keep their rooms clean. Reasoning: The professor used the word “dazzling” to describe the garbage thrown by the people. Many of the products are new and can be used. People do not take the time to sort out things they don’t need. As a result, people decided that they should not waste time on everything that can dump out. Just like what Nagle said, “New Yorkers tend to treat just about everything as something to throw out, she says. Furniture, electronics, and clothing are all put in the trash.” (Need food clothes). People wasting products and tossing out things do not just happen in New York. Along with the rise of package food, takeaways, and all the online shopping, the garbage-waste problem increased to a peak that had never been reached before.

Effects on the Environment

Since the 19th, only a small amount of it is ever recycled. In a study in 2015, scientists calculated that 448million tons of plastic were produced a year in the US, but only 18% overall were recycled, others were dumped in landfills or the ocean. This number did not improve a lot since 1989 when 14% of garbage was recycled back then (Anastasia).

Figure 4- People collecting ocean samples (garbage wastes) at the GPGP area. Source

For example, one of the largest garbage patches in the ocean: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP for short). It is starting to expand greater. Twice the size of Texas, the floating garbage mass is 16 times larger than the previous. According to scientists who participated in the research, it is carrying about 79,000 metric tons of plastic (The Great Pacific). This garbage patch was found in the eastern Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii. Over time, the big plastic objects break down into smaller bits, much cannot be seen by eyes. Other trash or big objects that will not break down float around the patch. GPGP is just one of the largest garbage patches in the ocean, only a small part of the whole problem. Garbage to us humans is just a daily normal thing, but to the sea animals, it’s things that end their lives. Fished and sea turtles might accidentally swallow plastic pieces or tangled by ropes. Researchers investigated the GPGP and found that 94% over 1.8 trillion pieces of trash in the patch are microplastic, but the mass is just 8% of the total. More than 75% of the 79,000 metric tons of garbage are large plastics (The Great Pacific). The patch of garbage increases every year, there is garbage all around the world, from 1977 to now. The big patches of garbage make people wonder about how humans created it and the impact on humans.

Possible Solutions

Luckily, people are starting to take action to save the environment. People found many possible solutions to prevent the problem to get worse. Many people realized the problem and acted many years ago, Paul Palmer founded the Zero Waste Institute in the 1970s. He was one of the first people to promote zero waste. He believes that recycling isn’t enough. In cradle-to-cradle design, all parts of a product are either biological nutrients or technical nutrients. This means everything can be safely returned to the earth to become food for other organisms. After a few years, people also designed the waste-to-energy solution to reduce waste. They convert waste to heat or electricity to reduce and help the health of the environment. Scientists predict, by 2050, people can avoid 2-3 gigatons of greenhouse gas because of the reduction of methane in the waste landfills (Waste- To- Energy). People had argued about this solution, because the process will take too much time, and instead of using waste to convert to energy, wind, sun, or water energy are a better choice. However, just talking about the solutions to garbage waste, this solution is one of the possible ways to solve the problem in a short time.

Figure 6- The process of Waste- To- Energy solution. Source

Honda, Subaru, General Motors, and Ford are car companies that started zero waste programs early in 2000. The food company Nestlé announced in 2015 that all 23 of its U.S factories are now zero waste (Gale). More people realize the importance of environmental health and started to make rules that help businesses and households recycle. Another example, in 2009 San Francisco, passed a law about zero waste. The law made recycling and reducing waste necessary. By 2010, San Francisco successfully prevented 80% of its landfills and incinerators and become “the greenest city” (Gale). From all the solutions, people can see the potential of everyone contributing to recycling and reducing garbage waste. One person cannot do a lot to improve, but if everyone joins to help, people can make Earth a better place.

Conclusion

To conclude, reducing garbage waste is a big problem globally, and many countries and people started to take action. However, some countries’ environments and people are still strongly impacted. Reducing and recycling garbage waste connects to many SDG goals, so if the garbage problem is solved, it will also help many of the other environmental goals and problems. Everyone wants their own country to improve, to be the top country both technologically and economically. People design all kinds of products, new technology, and apps, like shopping apps or take-away apps. These new technologies and products do make people’s lives more convenient, but in the long run, the garbage generated by these technologies and products has much more negative than positive. As all the things move on, people must not forget they also have to care about the environment and nature.

Ten Years of Death- French Revolution Journal Entry

Louis Corbin is a 36 years old peasant living in France.  Same first name as the king, but two enormous different lives.  One partying day after day, one working as a horse forever, and only death waiting for him. He fought for liberty and equality of the third- estate for TEN years. Was it worth it? Only himself knows. This is his diary during the revolution, of passion, deaths, and pain.

The French revolution, from 1789- 1799. A period of wars, poverty, and deaths. After ten years of fighting for liberty and equality, many things still stayed the same as before, while some things changed. For example, before the revolution, France was ruled by King Louis XVI, an absolute monarchy. During the revolution, France was taken over by the National Convention, the Committee of Public Safety, the Directory… Government after government, but the French people were not satisfied. At the end of the revolution, the leader changed to Napolean Bonaparte, a dictator who eventually turned into an emperor. However, the two aren’t so different. During the revolution, people were fighting for equality, but after all this revolt, many people still suffered from inequality, and there were still big gaps between rich and poor. On the other hand, the revolution also brought a lot of new ideas to France. The biggest example is the new constitution, it played a major role during the revolution,  both a cause and an effect. The new laws they created for the third estate ended many of the powers of the nobles and churches. Nobles and churches cannot punish the peasants privately, taking so much tax from them, and every adult citizens have the right to vote.  Which actually did give the third estate more freedom and equality. In conclusion, France did face many changes like laws and religions, but problems still retains and remained the same in some ways.

France Before the Peace- French Revolution in Plain English

Have you ever had a trip to France? A peaceful, beautiful, and cultured country… Then, have you ever wondered about what happened before the peace? I believe you do.  Before all the things we see nowadays, France was messed up for years, and that is the French Revolution from 1789 to 1799. So, let me tell you what happened in the beginning: During the pre-revolution time, France’s society was like every other European country. People were separated into three different estates(classes), absolute monarchy, nobles living their luxury lives while peasants worked and starved to death. Days after days, people in the third- estate finally decided to revolt against King Louis XVI(monarchy) and the nobles, which led to the start of the revolution in 1789. Want to know what happened? “Fatal Fever- Tracking Down Typhoid Marry”

“Fatal Fever- Tracking Down Typhoid Marry” written by Gail Jarrow. This book is about a germ detective, George Soper, tracking down the healthy bacteria career, Marry Mallon. In the beginning, when people found out about Marry’s career, polices and doctors were crazy about catching her in the hospital, which made her more scared, so she decided to escape and hide away. The problem is, there is bacteria wherever she goes and touched, all the families that used her as a cook were infected. After years of finding and tracking down, George Soper finally heard the news about Marry. In this book, the author wrote many facts about Typhoid fever,  warned readers to be knowledgeable, and reminded readers to wash their hands and keep clean.

Beneath is my notebook and some central ideas I found in the book:

The first central idea I found was: People should gain more knowledge. There are many examples through the book of how because people lack scientific knowledge, they fall into hard situations. If everyone knows what to do, I believe that everything will be solved way more easily.

After reading more pages,  I found another idea the author mentioned many times and summarized in the end, people should keep a clean environment.

During lesson 7, we learned how to make connections between ideas that at first did not seem to be connected but actually are.  One I found is how the author touched lightly on many people were isolated because of their gender. In other words, sexism. It’s hard to find because at first, I thought it’s just paragraphs that introduce Dr. Jo, but after you read again, you’ll realize it’s secretly describing and introducing the society at that time.

This is the bottom of my post. Thanks for scrolling all the way down 🙂 If you’re interested in Literary non-fiction and want to learn more about bacterias and one of the most fatal fever, read this book!

Genesis Begins Again Theme

I’m reading the book “Genesis Begins Again”.  This story is about a thirteen-year-old African girl called Genesis. She lives with her mom and dad in a small rented house. Her dad’s alcoholic and addicted to gambling, many times, her mom was fighting to divorce because of that. She’s being bullied by American students in school, they joked and tease about how she’s poor and black. She’s really a shame and unconfident, both at school and home. Affected by these things, Genesis ends up believing that the only way to look nice is to straighten her hair like Americans and use makeup to lighten her skin. It all changed after they moved to a new place, where students in school don’t mind she’s colored or not. She made new friends and even passed the audition in school. After all the encouragement from her friends and family, she started believing that maybe black can do the same thing as white.

Am I a humanist?

Humanism was promoted during the Renaissance, during the 15th to 16th centuries. People improved life using these aspects of humanism: individualism, secularism, realism, asking questions, and education. I gave myself 5 points for individualism because I agree that if everyone tries hard, everyone can be successful. I gave myself a 3  on realism because I think that things can be explained with a scientific explanation, but some can’t. I gave myself a 5 on secularism, because I don’t believe in any religions, and I believe that everyone should enjoy their life right now. I gave myself a 3.5 for challenging old thinking because I think we should just move on to what we think it’s right, not always thinking how history’s wrong. Lastly, I gave myself a 4, because education’s important all the time and it’s important to receive good education for everyone. Overall, I am 82% a humanist.

Found Poem- Button, Button

I created this found poem after I read the story “Button, Button”, by Richard Matheson. The story begins when a magic press button arrived at a couple’s house, Arthur and Norma. If they press the button, someone randomly in the world will die, but in return getting $50,000. Norma’s interested in the button, and that’s where the main conflict starts. Arthur says it’s no different than murdering someone. On the other hand, Norma thinks that they don’t even know who’s getting killed, so it’s not a murder. Arthur thinks that better life is created by their hardworking and their own, and one day it will happen. In contrast, Norma thinks she deserves a better life, and if there is an easier way to get a better life, why not? At last, Norma pressed the button when Arthur went to work, and she made the wrong decision, Arthur died. The main conflict in this story is an external conflict character versus character, where Norma arguing with Arthur should they press the button or not. I highlighted words to show how the characters’ internal thinking and their action changing through the story, from thinking the button is ridiculous to wanting to press it. The author used the button to symbolize people’s greediness and selfishness, also to show how people will make crazy decisions because of money.

Governments should ban single-use plastic

Can you imagine a world of grey sky and a dirty landscape? That could be the future for our children and grandchildren. To stop this, we should ban single-use plastic. Plastic is almost everything in our life, water bottles, chairs, toys, etc. people might say it’s the best invention ever! But plastic may lead us to the end of our world. Banning plastic can help animal species, stop pollution, and keep our earth alive.

Governments should ban single-use plastic because it can save many animal species. There are tons of marine animals such as turtles, seals, and sea birds, mistakenly consuming plastic or being tangled up in ghost nets that cannot get out. There are more than 1 million animals that die every year because of plastic, and plastic caused 318 animal extinction. If we don’t stop this, maybe one day your favorite animal will die out!

Secondly, banning plastic can help us stop pollution. Ella MacArthur had reported that the ocean will contain 937 million tons of plastic and only 895 million fish by 2050! When you dive with your friends in 2050, there will be more plastic than fish beside you. Everyone should know that when we burn plastic, it will release toxic, furans, and all other poisonous gases that can kill humans and animals. and we don’t want to wear masks all day to not get killed.

We should get rid of single-use plastic. People might say that banning plastic will damage the economy. But is the economy more important than our lives? The world is already filled with 156 million tons of plastic, and its 25 huge pyramids in Gisa, also, you should know that every year, per person will eat 70,000 microplastic averagely. Microplastic can cause cancer and illnesses in humans. If we don’t ban plastic, there will soon be an end to us humans.

In conclusion, governments should ban single-use plastic because it will save the animals, stop pollution, and rescue our world. There are already 40 nations starting to ban plastic bags. If every place starts to ban plastic, soon, there will be fresh air and a clean environment filled on earth.

HUM- “Our Stories Make History” Final Projects

This is a book trailer of the book I read: The One and Only Ivan.

Our story makes History- Final project and Reflection

Our story makes history- Reflection

During this unit—Our story makes history, I created primary sources about my experience and feelings during COVID- 19. I learned how to find reliable sources and writing journals for my final Our story makes history project. I organized my project using Thinglink, there are mixing of pictures and writings. Some of the feelings are positive, and some of the feelings are negative.

We created this project is to help the people in the future understand more about COVID- 19, also to record the things that we have done during COVID- 19, so many years later, you can look through experience to remember the history outbreak Coronavirus. People can learn about school closure, government decisions, Olympic game delay, success and challenges of e- learning and more things in my project. They should also look at other projects to have more information about living through COVID- 19.

This unit, I learned how to be a better journalist, I have never written journals many days continually. Another thing I learned was when you use a source, see if it’s reliable, because it might be fake news. This will help if you search every day to find news, so you won’t get the wrong information! I feel challenging when we first started this unit, I was confused about what should I do, but after all, I know the instructions.  I experienced and learned a lot of things during COVID-19, Our story makes history unit.
