Photo evaluation: All these photos were straight photographs. These photographs were inspired by an American photographer called Ezra Stroller who was devoted to taking monochrome modern architectural photographs. Though 20 out of 79 images I selected did not capture the identical building in similar perspectives and angles, these photos all exemplify the concept of abstract monochrome architectural beauty and focused on emphasizing the formal elements of line, shape, and pattern as my evaluated photo did (Ezra Stroller’s photo on John Hancock building: www.artsy.net/artwork/ezra-stoller-john-hancock-chicago-construction-skidmore-owings-and-merrill-chicago-il-8), while matching with my Statement of Intent where my expected formal elements were successfully highlighted.

Below are the green section photos:

The green section shares more similarities to my evaluated image and the 8 photos in the gallery because these photographs emphasize more on the formal elements of line, shape, and pattern, as inspired by my chosen artist Ezra Stroller, compared to the rest of the yellow section.

Below are the red section photos:

Why did you choose this image in particular?

I chose this image because I believe this photo best represents my intended vision of photo set one, which is to emphasize an abstract monochrome modern architectural style, that greatly focuses on the formal elements of the line, shape, pattern, as well as tone.

•What do you find surprising or unusual about this photograph?

I found the reflected cloud on the window of the architecture surprising as it is like a combination of the sky and the tall building, which delves deeper into the theme of the coexistence of both nature and artificial objects.

•Look carefully and choose ONE of the Formal Elements that you think is important in the photograph (E.g. Focus, Light, Line, Repetition, Shape, Texture, Value/Tone).

Line.

•Describe why you think it is important (2 or 3 sentences)

Line plays a crucial part in this image because it creates a guiding line for the viewers and gradually attracts them toward the top of the building, creating a sense of awe due to the extensive length of these guiding lines and the tiny blocks that pile up to form this remarkably tall building. Therefore, the element of line not only serves as a visual guide but also as a powerful emphasis on the scale of the object to impact the emotions of the viewers.

(Since this photo was taken by me and the other three questions are regarding my chosen artist, which is already explained in blog post 9, I won’t leave more comments on those questions)
