G9 Engineering Project Reflect and Share

The most difficult challenge I faced in this unit was to decide what size of PVC pipe to buy without a bottle; I drew the diameter of the pipe on the table using whiteboard markers and pulled a 1:1 Nongfu 5L bottle on the table too. Making such meticulous measurements without purchasing any items makes the jointing process extremely simple after I have purchased all the materials. When I was making the inside part of the Nongfu 5L bottle, Mr.Michie gave me a lot of helpful feedback/tips, such as using a toothpick on the top of the bottle could stable the thinner pipe that is inside, the thicker line. The making process was easy and done at a fast speed.

The planning part is done in great detail, which makes the subsequent work very easy; for my planning part, I initially didn’t have the wooden stand part planned out because I thought that my Radial flow settler could stand balance by itself and not lean on one side. After all, I thought the PVC pipe was light, but it was heavier than I had expected. I didn’t consider the weight of the Radial flow settler, and this caused me to do the gluing process in the last few days. I could have managed my time better in this project, but the making process was done well, and I have less focused on doing my blog post; this caused me to do my blog post after this project had finished.

Improve: What I could improve is to make all my process of making moving forward for a few days so that I’m going to do only some of my work in 2-3 days and worried about not getting it finished on time. I have struggled with choosing what project I will be doing, so next time, I will select the project I will do faster. My blog post should be done faster so I can use what’s on my blog post. Taking more photos while doing my project is also a great idea so that there are more pictures of me doing stuff. Still, time management could be improved.

What I learned and shared: During this project, I have learned many ways energy is transferred, especially the one I was making; it was about kinetic energy moving to gravitational energy. We don’t usually see this energy transformation in life; the radial flow settler is a part of the water purification system, purifying fish feces. It was my first time hearing the word Radial flow settler. I learned that work could be done quickly, but doing a workbook takes time. What I have shared is that I shared my project with my classmate on the 7th of march; while presenting, I introduced the use of a Radial flow settler and the function of each PVC pipe.

The Radial flow settler did well during this project. The system worked; no water leaked from my radial flow settler or the pipe. When searching for a tutorial video teaching me how to make a Radial flow settler, I could only find a video with a fish tank-sized tank. My final product was quite balanced after connecting the Radial flow settler with the wooden stand.

G9 Engineering Project Develop and Plan

Radial Flow Settler

Design Sketches:

Description: On the left, it’s a water tank or a fish bowl; on the left, it is the Radial flow settler (Nongfu bottle connected with PVC pipes.)

I decided to do one of the projects from the 3 I researched: The radial flow settler. I chose to do this because a radial flow settler is interesting, and if I managed my time correctly, I could have it done within two classes. While I was struggling with what to do for my project, Mr.Michie came up with the idea of doing a Radial flow settler. This is the first time anyone has made a radial flow settler for this project. This might be challenging.

Things that I’ll have to pay attention to:
1. Make sure no water leakage and sufficient stability at pipe connections
2. To make the Bottle balance enough, I’ll have to think of a way to keep it balanced (on the left side, have more pipe ), such as creating a stand for it
3. Stabilize the intermediate connection (without shaking when water is passing through)a

Material list:

·Nongfu Mountain Spring Drinking Water Bucket 5L
·PVC elbow inner diameter 32mm x 5
·PVC inner wire direct 32mm x2
·PVC outer wire direct 32mm x2
·PVC ball valve socket inner diameter 32mm x1
·PVC straight plastic pipe, outer diameter 50mm, wall thickness 2.4mm, 20cm long
·4 Four wooden boards (Stand building)

Tool list:

·Hotglue Gun
·PVC pipe scissors, PPR pipe quick shear, 20-32mm water pipe
·Cutter
·Scissors
·Woodglue (Stand building)

Ordering:

Plan:

February 24,2023 Ordering the materials

February 27,2023 Start Building at February, hopefully get 60% work finished

March 1,2023 Finishing up the work and start gluing the wooden stand

March 3,2023 Assemble them and prepare them for display

G9 Engineering Project Define and Inquire

Idea 1: Kinetic energy to electrical energy transformation – Wind Turbine/Windmill

The wind wheel rotates under the action of the wind, which converts the wind’s kinetic energy into mechanical energy of the wind wheel shaft, and the generator turns to generate electricity driven by the wind wheel shaft.

During the operation of a wind turbine, the order of energy conversion is wind energy – kinetic energy – mechanical energy – electrical energy.

Idea 2: Kinetic energy  to Gravitational energy – Radial flow settler

The water will enter from the highest water pipe on the left, and when it reaches the middle, it will receive kinetic energy, which will impact it to the top of the water bottle (container). Then, under the influence of gravity, the water and  settleable solids will be smashed and flow to the bottom of the water bottle (container)

During the operation of a radial flow settler, the order of energy conversion is kinetic energy – gravitational energy

Idea 3: Electric energy to kinetic energy – High Speed Water Boat using DC Motor

After starting the electronic components, the motor will start to operate. After the motor operates, it will cause the fan blades to rotate at a high speed. The high-speed rotating fan blades will cause the water boat to quickly move forward in the water

During the operation of a High-Speed Water Boat using a DC Motor, the order of energy conversion is electric energy to kinetic energy (Using the motor to fire the fan blade) to kinetic energy (Moving the boat through using fan blade)

ISB Backstage Tour: Spaces and Places

This is used to put light on the actor; inn this space, it is hushed and hot. This place is at the back of the HS theatre and on the 3rd floor. This is called a dimmer rack to adjust the lights

This machine controls the string that holds the curtain up and down. It is located at the highest place in the HS theatre

This is the Motor room, and this room could control all the electrical-related stuff that’s in the HS theatre. This is located in the 3rd floor of the HS theatre

This is the Spectator Seats/Auditorium; the audience sits here to watch the show. This is located in the back of the HS theatre and it take up 60% of the space in the HS theatre

This is where all the curtain is. At the top, you could see the string holding them all from falling. It is also a scene background; for example, the one at the right is a forest scene. This is located at the top of the stage at the HS theatre

Product Design Food Waste Unit Reflection

We were told to think of a problem we have faced when eating in the last unit of Product Design and I designed a clip that could heat up the dried sushi seaweed with a small about of water (so that it will be soft)

I think my biggest success is that I was able to make my prototype out with in limited materials because of covid I could only use the material thats already at home such as cardboard, paper and tape.

Advice I’d give a future student doing this project would be creating more design before making prototype for it so the process of making the prototype could be easier and have a look at your materials before drawing design sketches.

I think my prototype is really success because it looked similar to my design sketches and it included the function that I draw for my design sketches, but it could be better if I add more details to it.
