Concepts

  • Middle line : In photography, the middle line creates balance. Placing the key subjects along this line enhances symmetry or emphasizes the background.

  • Perspectives: In photography, different perspectives can change the mood and meaning of a photograph. A low angle can make a subject appear more imposing, while a high angle can create a sense of vulnerability.

  • Angles: In photography, the angle of capture can alter the visual narrative. When experimenting with various angles like straight on, from above, or from below can show different features of the subject and create compositions.

  • layers: In photography, Incorporating layers into images adds complexity and interest. Using foreground, middle ground, and background elements can guide the viewer’s eye and create a sense of depth in the composition.

Vision

Hutong photoset vision:

My message in my photos is to embrace the beauty in daily life and the diverse people around us, young or old. I want my audience to look at my photos and feel the culture and humanity. They should feel proud and warm as they connect with the images, seeing stories behind each moment. I will get inspiration from the Hutong, observing the varied lives of people there, capturing candid moments of their daily routines—whether it’s riding a bike, taking a walk, or two people having a conversation. To enhance the emotional depth of my photographs, I will employ techniques such as using different angles like, shooting from above to capture the perspective below, or from below to emphasize the stature and presence of my subjects. I also plan to incorporate the technique of layering in my compositions. By including elements in the foreground, middle ground, and background, I can create a sense of depth and context, allowing viewers to connect themselves in the scene. I believe it is essential to recognize that beauty exists in every moment of our daily lives, and that every person has their own unique beauty, regardless of age. Through my lens, I hope to reveal these hidden gems and celebrate the beauty in our shared humanity.

Straight photography definition

Straight photography refers to capturing vivid movement and the essence of daily life, particularly focused on humanity and social interactions. It presenting scenes in a way that is unposed and spontaneous. These images often convey powerful messages about society, culture, and the human experience, allowing viewers to connect emotionally with the subject. In straight photography, the key is to document real moments as they go through, capturing the life without manipulation or forceful poses. For instance, a photograph of a girl turning her head captures not just moment, but also the surrounding context, emotions, and atmosphere, all in focus and detail. This style celebrates the beauty of everything and the unpredictability of life. It portrays genuine expressions and actions, often highlighting social issues or the subtleties of everyday experiences. Straight photography invites viewers to reflect on the world around them, giving deeper understanding of human connections and societal dynamics. Straight photography often relies on natural light and unaltered environments, further enhancing its authenticity. By capturing the interactions between people and their surroundings, it creates  powerful moments about life as it is.

Triptych & Evaluation

Evaluation for photo set 1 798:

I believe I met my intentions pretty well for this photo set. I zoomed in and took photos of rock statues and parts of factory’s that portrayed a beautiful vision of texture, color and contrast. I used elements like contrast between texture for photos that show smooth sides and edged sides. I used the element of shapes to created shapes in each photo to make a more vivid shown. I was influenced by photographer Aaron Siskind, his use in contrast and tone made me inspired to take those photos and create emotion through colors and moods. Throughout my photo shoot I found it hard to find the texture I wanted to capture. But through changing angles and perspectives I was able to use a singular statue and find many different photos of contrast between texture. I hope my audience will look at my photos and feel the beauty and warm in the textures and colors.

Statement of intent/(Vision)

Vision:

For my statement of intent, I want my audience to think about the beauty in everything (architecture, environment, texture…). Give the chance for beauty to be seen in different things in the world and be appreciated. I want my audience to feel awed at the different types of beauty they see in usual perspectives. I want their perspectives to be moved by the photographs, and break the barriers of bias of beauty. I will get inspiration and develop my ideas by looking for photographs that show parts of architecture, environment, texture and sharp color tones to expand the specialty of beauty. I prefer different view to be shown in the photographs so there can be different aspects of perspectives, emotions and moods, throughout enjoying the photos. In my opinion, we should allow ourselves to try and accept that beauty is in everything, even in places or things you never thought so.

Action 2

Photographer: Saul Leiter

5 Characteristics

  • blurry
  • tone
  • angle
  • point of focus
  • reflective/reflections

My chosen artist’s photographs abstract because they show use of shooting through a frame, collecting the scenery during rain and uses soft focus to create a painterly effect in his photographs. I like his style because I feel like his photos show calmness and gives a cold chilly feeling which is unique in photography. This artist inspires me by his special perspective and ways of photography, I like the idea of capturing photos of water/rain.

Why did you choose this image in particular: Picture 3

•What do you find surprising or unusual about this photograph?

I like the flash of the person walking through the shot. It brings story and feeling to the photo.

•Look carefully and choose ONE of the Formal Elements that you think is important in the photograph (E.g. Focus, Light, Line, Repetition, Shape, Texture, Value/Tone).

The texture of frozen water on the car window frame is important for this photo. It brings the atmosphere of season and weather, the cold also reminds people of memories from times in snow season. (or color maybe)

•Describe why you think it is important (2 or 3 sentences)

It really brings out the cold/chill feeling of the photo. It creates a boarder for the photo that makes a contrast in the tones.
