Statement of intent

The title of this project is mirror of the inner Identity. The theme I want to explore with my photographs is diverse emotions expressed in different settings. I want my audience to emphasize and connect with the moods in each photograph. I will get inspiration and develop my ideas by looking for photographs that demonstrates strong emotions.

Red photos

The artist that inspired my work is Bruce Gilden. Bruce Gilden, a street photographer who focuses on direct shots of strangers walking by, applies dramatic light and dark contrasts to his photographs. The sharp facial expressions of the people inspired my vision for this set of photograph. The three red photographs that I selected all share the element of light and dark contrasts and faces that fills the frame.

The photo that I chose to evaluate is the photograph in the middle of the old woman. Same as the other two photos, I applied the technique of getting close to the subject in around one arm length distance. The most appealing element must be the facial expression of the old woman and the shadow of a person on the upper left corner. Additionally, the black and white color of this photograph reveals the light and dark contrast between shades evidently, making the texture of the woman’s skin stand out. The darkest part of this photograph, the shadow at the back, fills up the diagonal corner of the frame, which is what I really like about.

Inspiration- Bruce Gilden

Bruce Gilden is a street photographer who focuses on direct flash of photos on strangers passing by. Some of the appealing elements in his photos include the dramatic light and dark contrasts and the sharp facial expressions of the people. His innovative style of capturing close photos of strangers fascinates me as I would also want to highlight the the details of people in everyday life and enhancing the contrasts between different shades.

“I find the people who are interesting. The freaks, the unique individuals… And the people who don’t belong.” — Bruce Gilden

Just like Bruce Gilden, I incline to get attracted by unique people and the different reactions towards the camera. Some people might not be willing to be snapped by a camera, others might be confused or surprised. Thus, the facial expressions in each photo would indicate different feelings.
