Street Photography Red Tag

I chose these photos because they fit my vision by showing people in everyday life. Also, they show a story somehow by their way of positioning and doing the things they would normally do, and showing their ordinary appearance. For improvement, I would focus more on the facial expression of the subject and capture more pictures that express more emotion. I used street techniques such as getting really close, capturing gestures, and eye contact in my photos. The first one includes capturing the gestures of the two old people and I took the picture when they made eye contact with the camera. The old couple were in a symmetrical position but they also showed a contrast of colors through their hat, which makes the picture stand out. The second picture uses the technique of capturing gestures. It shows a very ordinary scene in the Hutong, and the sunshine shined on the man just right on the spot which makes the photo unique and makes the main subject stand out. The last photo has the technique of getting really close. It is a close shot of a photo of a man smoking, and even though the man was wearing sunglasses, I could still tell that he was looking at the camera. The smoke made the photo not monotonous.

Street Photography Yellow Tag

I chose these photos because they really stand out to me. Some of them are selected from a series of similar pictures and I chose the best one to put in here. Some of them have a direct look into the camera while others are in ordinary life. I think these pictures all show a very interesting facial expression (since the pictures were captured when the people were doing their normal routine).

Introduction to street photography

1. Decisive moment

Realizing the importance of an event in a fraction of a second, as well as the precise organization of the appropriate expression of the event.

2. Work the scene

Improve photos by improving previous attempts.

3. DON’T MOVE

4. Capture gestures

When the person in front of the camera shows emotion by using facial expressions or body gestures, the photographer captures the moment.

5. Get really close

The photograph pictures the details of a person or object by taking the camera close to the subject.

6. Eye contact

When viewing the image later, having the subject look directly at the camera gives a feeling of direct eye contact.

7. Focus on the background

Focus on the entire image rather than just the subject being photographed. If this is the case, focus on the background and manipulate the aperture to create a long depth of field.

Inspiration

Brassai

I chose Brassai as an inspiration artist because I like how he uses a lot of light in his photos, and I really like to take pictures that play with the lighting. So choosing to take photos like that would be easier for me and more interesting for me. I also like how the pictures are black and white, and the light sticks out in the picture.

This photo in particular grabs my attention because I really like how there’s the contrast of only one person in the middle and a light is shing on him. And the contrast of black and white makes the photo has a story and emotion.

Triptych

The title of my project is “A Blurry World”. The artists that have inspired my work most are Aaron Siskind and Uta Barth. Aaron Siskind has inspired my use of taking pictures that zoom in on the details of an object. He helped me to learn how to create a photo that catches the beautiful details of a normal object. Uta Barth has inspired the way I take photos that are out of focus. I learned through her photos that taking out-of-focus pictures can be challenging since some of the scenes would not look nice without focus. Also, her work is mostly bright colors, which is different from Aaron Siskind’s work and this helped me to develop different skills of taking different kinds of pictures. In order to develop my ideas for this project I experimented with researching about Uta Barth and examining her pictures. I also brainstormed some ideas about what I wanted my triptych to look like. After experimenting, I brought together the best parts of my project to create my final series of images by taking several different pictures with different angles and different styles to decide what my final three pictures would be. To create my final series of images I chose the best three pictures from all of my other photos. These pictures have met want I expected, and they fit my vision. I chose to work like this because the style of this artist is very different from the last artist I examined, so I would like to try something new. Also, I really want to take pictures that are out of focus and that show some infrastructure. Overall, I think the strengths of the project are I successfully took blurry pictures and followed the style of Uta Barth because I feel confident about the pictures I’ve taken, and I think they are related to my vision and Uta Barth’s style. The areas that I will need to work on in future projects are getting pictures that are more related to each other or taking pictures that involve more skills because, in this triptych, the last photo did not really fit in with the color of the other two pictures. So, I would try to be more careful when taking the pictures that I need to remember what my theme is. Also, I need to work on my skills in taking pictures because I think my photos’ creativity needs further improvement, so in order to take better pictures, I think I need to work on my skills more.
