  1. This photo uses shape, I took it in the hallway. It worked because it showed the contrast of the colors and the separation of the two shapes.

2. This photo uses the element shape, it is the light on the ceiling. This photo worked because the shape follows the drawing and showed contrast of color.

3. This photo uses texture and it is a picture of the chair in the cafeteria. I don’t think it worked quite well because it only shows the color and pattern but did not include much texture.

4. This photo uses shape and it is the roof of the door to the field. I think it worked because it shows the pattern of shape and the contrast of color. But the end part tilted a little.

5. This photo also uses the element shape, and it was taken on the couch in my house. I think it worked because it has the two main lines in the photo and there’s the contrast of color.

6. This photo uses shape and I took this photo of the water bottle on the ground. It worked because the shape was the main focus of the photo and I prevented to have shadow in it.

7. This photo also uses shape and I took this outside of my window. It worked because there is the contrast of color and the shape also fits the drawing.

8. This photo uses the element of pattern, I took this in the library of a chair. I think this worked because it showed the contrast of color and the constant pattern.

9. This photo also uses pattern, I took this in the library. I think it worked because it shows the constant pattern but the background is a little bit messy.

10. This photo uses shape and it is the railing on the stair. I think this didn’t work quite well because it did not match the drawing. There should be a filled space between the lines but the photo I took only showed two lines.

11. This picture shows the element of lines, it was taken in the hallway. I think it worked because it showed the lines getting closer together, however, the surrounding was messy.

12. This photo shows the element of texture, it is the carpet in the library. I think it worked because it showed the texture of the blurry lines.

Aaron Siskind:

  • Texture
  • Black and white color
  • No pattern

Aaron Siskind uses dark colors to emphasize the texture and contrasts them with lighter-colored backgrounds. If I could name this photo, I would name it “Tilting Edge”. I think that the texture is unique in this photo, it is the main focusing point for viewers. My first impression of this photo was there is originally a plain wall or tree, but the edges are tilting, and it attracts my attention.

In this photo, Aaron Siskind used a lot of texture. He emphasized the cracking part to make it more 3 dimensions. Another element that Aaron Siskind used in this photo was the tone, the dark color balanced the main object and the light color background. He also used irregular shapes, the shapes of either the cracking or the background have a regular shape. It does not follow any pattern, and it does not have an identical shape in the whole photo.

Formal Elements

Formal Elements in photography are the elements used in taking photos. These elements include line, shape, pattern, texture, value, and focus.

Line:

The lines in photography use lines to create visual interest and convey information in images. Lines can be used to guide the audience’s attention, create depth, and even create a sense of movement.

Shape:

The shape defines a flat, enclosed spatial area. Shapes are composed of colors and lines, but all shapes are limited to two-dimensional dimensions.

Pattern:

The elements in the scene reappear in a predictable manner. Patterns can be seen everywhere and are commonly found in shapes, colors, or textures.

Texture:

The visual quality of an object’s surface is displayed through changes in shape, hue, and color depth. Textures bring vitality and vitality to images that originally looked dull and dull.

Value:

The value defines the brightness of a given color or tone. When visualizing a value as a ratio or gradient from dark to light, it can be better understood. The more color tone changes in an image, the lower the contrast.

Focus:

The focus is the area used by the lens to highlight objects, people, or situations. It is the process of adjusting the lens to find the maximum resolution, clarity, and contrast of the selected theme.

An image can present many elements at a time, these elements are not the limitations of the photo, it is just a way to make photographs of different kind. A photo can include many elements to show its specialness and value. Having more elements in a photograph could make it seems more interesting and more beautiful.

Pictorialismto Straight Photography

The pictorialism movement in photography shows the aesthetics of photography and a set of principles of photography as art. It is usually the main object in the picture in focus and everything else blurry. The straight photography movement in photography means the image has not undergone any changes. These photographers believe that the artistic quality of portraits is due to the theme, composition, favorable location, and lighting used. This kind of photo implies more details and makes the main object stand out. Photography began to be understood and appreciated as an art form, accompanied by innovative techniques and production techniques used by photographers.

The pictorialism movement in photography:

The straight photography movement in photography:

Edward Weston’s photographs mostly consist of one main subject that fills most of the space of the photo. The photos are all black and white, and the background is usually darker than the main subjects. This makes a contrast between the object and the background which emphasizes the main object. The straight photography movement had a big influence on Edward Weston because his artworks are all kinds of straight photography movements. He had been taking photos of both real and abstract objects discovered. Aaron Siskind is also a photographer who uses straight photography movement, his photos record the real world ‘seen’ by the camera in an abstract way. However, Uta Barth is not a photographer who uses this technique. Her photos were taken to investigate and observe behavior. In multiple of her works, she explores the transience of light and its ability to overwhelm and completely destroy human vision. Andreas Gursky’s work also does not show the elements of straight photography. His work shows large-format architectural and landscape color photos, often using high angles of view.

Abstraction

Abstract in photography can be defined as capturing images in which the subject is not the most interesting element

I think this statement about abstract in photography means images created using photographic materials and equipment that are not related to the realistic world. This kind of photograph allows photographers to bring the audience into a world beyond normal daily experiences. It is usually created by the photographer’s imagination, and they use patterns, motion, and light to create images that normally are not recognizable.

WRONG! Contact Sheet

I took 9 photos of wrong pictures, they broke the rules of out of focus, balancing elements, rule of third, symmetrical patterns, and unclear subject. All of my photos were taken in ISB and they include some small details in the school and some conspicuous elements. Here below are the photos I took, hope you can enjoy viewing them!

Can you take a wrong picture?

I could take a wrong photo depending on which rule I broke. Taking a wrong picture is based on the photographer’s style or how they consider a wrong picture.

Photo taken in 1967 by John Baldessari

Context in photography is really important because it can affect how the picture is being viewed. Context shapes our understanding and interpretation of all visual materials encountered. It could add a background for the photo and provide more thoughts about the picture. The word “Wrong” in this photo makes a difference in changing how viewers consider this photo. The message that Baldessari was trying to say in the image is why should we conform to conventional aspects of art or photography, and why our work has to be judged. However, without this context, the title “Wrong” can mislead viewers to think that this a wrong photo, and should never take pictures like this.

Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity

Go to this Sway

My character is called Richard, he is 23 years old and has been suffering in the unequal society as a peasant for his whole life until the revolution. He is a cowardice person and never wants to express himself. During the revolution, he defeated his fear and helped France to become a loving country.

I think the French Revolution cannot be determined whether if it is worth it or not. It depends on which side you are during that time. The aim of the revolution is to have liberty, equality, and fraternity in the society. So the peasant would think that the revolution is worth it, they’ve got what they wanted and made the three estate equal. However, the people from the first and second class would feel unfair. The French Revolution made their power decrease and many people were sacrificed. They were at the top of France before the revolution, but after the revolution, they lost their power and were equal with the third estate, which they also hate.

The Bloody Time of France

“Liberty, equality, fraternity, or death; – the last, much the easiest to bestow, O Guillotine!”

If you like to learn about bloody wars in history, the French Revolution is the best choice. This video highlights the key events that happened in the French Revolution. It talks about how it started to how it ends, where peasants were treated badly and the nobles were superiors. Things such as, the third class was forced to meet in an indoor tennis court to form an assembly, and the execution of the upper class and the meaningless killing of the peasants were all involved in the French revolution. Then it ends with an equal society and a success of the revolution. See about the details of all the surprising and bloody events during the French Revolution in the video below.
