Street Photography – Final Set

Has this set of photographs met my statement of intent?

This is the final set of photographs for the street photography unit; for this set, I focused more on meeting the statement of intent, which I had not done in the first set of photographs. My stated intent was to demonstrate the contrast of time, which can be seen in many of the photographs. The most visible example of this can be found in photograph number 4, which depicts a MeiTuan delivery driver standing next to the company’s brand new autonomous vehicles. I believe this perfectly matches my statement of intent because it shows the contrast between a traditional delivery driver who has been working for years and a brand new modern alternative introduced by the company to “phase out” traditional methods. Overall, I believe my final set of photographs met my statement of intent and outperformed my first set.

Favorite & Least Favorite Photographs Critique

This is my least favorite photograph in comparison to the others; it can be described as bland or uninspiring. Despite this, there are still aspects of it that are excellent, particularly its use of reflections. This photo excels in its use of reflection because the main focus of the image is the large glass window behind the pigeons, and the reflection is very clear due to the combination of lighting and time of day, adding a unique aspect to this image compared to others, despite being my least favorite. As this photograph depicts numerous pigeons sitting in front of the massive reflective glass, if I were to give this image a title that accurately describes what it is, I would call it “Wings of reflection”. The wings portion of this name represents the pigeons, and the reflection obviously represents the reflective glass. While it is not a very creative or vibrant title, I believe it accurately represents what this image is about and how it appears.

This is my favorite photograph in this collection; my reasoning is based on the photograph’s distinct coloring and framing, as well as how well it matches my statement of intent. What I like about this image’s coloring is how the yellow and green are enhanced by the blue/dark background; I think this is interesting/perfect because it clearly indicates to the viewer that the highlighted colors are the main focus of the photograph. This image’s framing is also excellent because it perfectly exemplifies the rule of thirds, allowing the viewer to easily see the main focus of the photograph, as well as the coloring. This scene depicts the feeling of change by showing the two subjects (the delivery driver and the yellow vehicle) standing next to each other, with the delivery driver representing the traditional method of delivery and the car representing the new and modern method. This demonstrates that as time passes, there is a shift from the traditional method of delivery to the more modern autonomous method, represented by the car.

1st Set Street Photography Evaluation

1.Explain How your own images link to your chosen artist’s images.

My Photographs is linked to my inspiration artist’s images as they reflect his vision of focusing on the background of the photograph rather than the subject, it also reflects his photographs by applying vibrant lighting in the photograph like yellow, red, etc.

2.How do they tell a story?

Especially in Photo number 5, it tells the story of two lovers under the umbrella, looking onwards at the shining tower, signifying their bright future

3.Why did you put them in that particular order?

4.What are the overall strengths of these images

the overall strengths of these images are the unique usage of lighting, which appears most strong in night photography, which is the main concept of my photographs. when implementing vibrant lighting in night photography, it helps the color stand out and allows the viewer to understand what the main focus of the photograph is.

5.what skills have you developed and how applied them?

One of the most important skills I’ve learned is night photography, which can be seen in all of my photographs because I’ve been interested in it since I first started taking pictures. I also developed a skill of utilizing vibrant light in dark situations, as seen in most of my photos using the bright and vibrant tower, which stands out in front of the dark night sky.

6.How have you developed as a photographer – What did you learn from your previous tasks

As this is the first set of photographs utilizing night photography, there was not much i could learn from previous tasks that i could apply in this set, however one of the main thing i learned from the last few tasks that of composition, in these photos i positioned the subjects and architecture in a way that

7.Something that works well about this/these images is…

something that works well in these images is the use of symmetry, especially in photo 4, you can see that the use of symmetry is very apparent which can be the most easily seen in the two lights on opposite sides of the tower.

8.Something I need to develop further is…

Something i need to develop further is to more actively reflect my statement of intent in my photos, as for these photos atleast it is hard to find reflections of the statement of intent in these photographs

9.What are you looking for in your nest set of images?

I am looking to take more night photographs, which may prove to be difficult as the window for that is becoming smaller and smaller as the seasons progress. and i am also looking to continue to take night photographs with vibrant lighting

10.What would you do differently next time? How would the photo improve as a result?

For the next set i would instead of taking pictures with my iPhone Camera, i would use my father’s professional camera, as using an iPhone camera you can see flaws in the photograph such as a high noise level.

Street Photography – Inspiration Artist (Masashi Wakui)

Masashi was chosen as an artist for my inspiration because he primarily focuses on photography of vintage street markets, such as photographs of Japanese streets with numerous stores on the sides of the road, with a combination of warm and cold light. There are also many instances in his photography where, rather than using the subject as the main focus of the photograph, he focuses on making the background interesting with many details, and with his unique use of lighting (natural lighting), he allows the audience to focus on the detail and work he put into the background rather than the subject. I enjoy this artstyle because I believe the use of background allows the photography to tell a much more efficient story than simply focusing on the subject.

In the first picture The artist uses warm lighting to deviate the subject from the background, with the subject being that of cold colors, this creates a contrast that i intend to use in my photographs.

in the second photograph, the artist uses cold lighting, with heavy implications in the sky. there are also a large appearance of lights and street lighting which continues to add more character to the image.

Statement of Intent – Street Photography

The goal of the project called “Tradition in Transition” is to show how traditional cultures and architecture can clash with modernization and progress. Through photography, I want to tell the story of how the fast progress of the future threatens to destroy long-standing traditions and buildings, replacing them with sleek skyscrapers and simple designs. My goal is for viewers to feel conflicted as they try to decide if the benefits of progress are greater than the losses of cultural heritage. To do this, I will look at pictures that show how traditional and modern architecture clash. I will use contrasts in color and background to show how preservation and development are at odds with each other. I’m also going to look into black-and-white photography techniques, adding small touches of color to make the transition even more complicated.

Top 3 Photos 2nd Set

With these three photos from my second set of photographs, I decided to depart from the black and white aesthetic of the first set. To get the best lighting, I photographed my mother in front of a window. One problem with these photoshoots was that the sky was heavily cloudy on the day of the shoot, limiting the amount of light from the outside, resulting in photos that did not turn out as planned. Nonetheless, after taking the photographs, I used Photoshop’s blur filter to blur the background while preserving my subject’s silhouette. I also used Mr. Stewart’s suggestion of shining a light on the subject from the side to reveal their face. Overall, the photos did not turn out as expected, but I think they are still good, even if the weather could have been better. These photographs add to the original set by representing the subject’s thoughts and ideas about freedom, with the second photo showing the subject in a pose that represents freedom and acceptance, and the first and third showing the subject thinking and pondering the concept.

Inspiration – Portraits

  1. Roy Pan

The main theme of Roy’s photography is to take photos in very convinitn situation, as quoted from him “I love taking photos with my phone because it’s super convenient and accessible. I can pull my phone out of my pocket and capture a moment within 3 seconds, which isn’t the case with DSLR cameras”. this insires me as i also do not have access to DSLR cameras, and most of my photographs are taken using phones. i chose Roy pan as my artist also because he captures photos that are very self explanatory, as quoted from him: “’m constantly looking for moments that tell stories. Moments that are self-explanatory and interesting”. i apply the same logic with my photographs as the feeling conveyed in the photos can be very easily recognized, like sad, anxious, etc.
