Unexpected Superpowers

Quiet Power is a non-fiction book by Susan Cain, it compares introverts and their difficulty in our loud and chaotic world. In this book it gives you examples of introverts who succeeded and different non-fiction stories about people in different varieties of age. Susan Cain’s story shows the central idea that: “Introverts should maintain their abilities to think creatively, brainstorm in their own quiet ways, and not succumb to socially accepted, extroverted methods of working” (Friedman 1).  The central idea I think that summarizes the whole book is: Introverts are more likely to succeed.  I realized this was the main idea because the author hints early on in the book that introverts are powerful, and the author also gave us examples of famous people that succeeded as an introvert. I like this book mainly because normally the books always talks about why extroverts are good. Socializing is stressful for introverts, and they need a lot of courage to speak up. In this book, it shows the readers the lives of introverts, and how they see the world. This book is a highly compelling to read, where surprises peak around every turn-of-the-page. Quiet Power can change your life, introverts, or extroverts, you can also listen to Susan Cain TedTalk and read this book to get more tips on your life. Please scroll down to see the analysis of the main ideas and recurring themes from this fantastic quiet superpower! This is the note I took on my first day, about Quiet Power. It shows my thinking in the book at first and the first theme I came up with was that being introverted should not be a bad thing, it is a thing to cherish. Throughout this book the author Susan Cain gave examples of why introverts are valuable, vulnerable, and how the powerful introverts can impact the society.  It also gives us life tips and examples of introverts and their lives.

Below is a picture of my central ideas, themes, and social issues from day 2. The central idea that I sticked to the most was probably this one: “Being introverted is not something to outgrow; it is something to accept and grow into-and even to cherish”(Cain 27). This central idea is very important to introverts and extroverts, and it tells the world that introverts should not be underestimated. Some introverts will probably have some problems socializing, and I think the most important social issue is: Discrimination against introverts because of misunderstanding. This sort of connects with the central idea I just shared and people sometimes isn’t thoughtful of them.

Below is a picture of my notes about a central idea: Introverts are also successful. This book does not have a protagonist, it has a lot of different minor characters. If you are an introvert, you can find some examples that are similar to your life. The book is split up to 6 sections, it starts with a manifesto for introverts and have different examples of introverts life in different settings.

Below is a picture of my notes on a cause and effect from day 9 it shows the balance between yin and yang, which in this case means introverts and extroverts. My notes shows how different causes and effects connect to each other.

As an extrovert I’ve learned a lot about introverts in this book, it made me think more about how I should treat introverts. I deeply encourage you to read this book, because introverts do not really feel welcome and safe in our society, but if we learn about them, we can make a world a better place. Introverts and extroverts are just like Yin and Yang, we need to balance our world and always be supportive! Thanks for reading this blog post! Hugely appreciated!
