Lisette Model

Lisette Model was an American Austrian photographer who combined architectural photography with street photography. Her approach is always in black and white, and has a detailed layer effect that combines the faces of people with the large infrastructure of a city. Lisette Model often uses high contrast photography to give an intense duality feeling.

Lisette Model had a unique perspective, and her photography was revolutionary at the time because normal portraiture photography was formal and posed in a studio. The pioneering of street photography to gather more raw natural emotions gave way for more artistic influence and creative input.

This photograph depicts several layers of different subjects and backgrounds, including at least three different buildings, several different people, and a bus. The main subject of this photo is the women that is central, and on the bottom two thirds of the page. Her image appears to be scattered to the right of her as well, to create a sense of movement in time. The moving buildings and people in the background make the image feel alive, like a bustling city. The photograph gives a busy feeling, with a repeating grid like pattern throughout the building’s windows, and the clothing that people are wearing. The overall photograph could give the viewer an insight into what the city feels like, or capture the life of everyday people.
