“She might just as well hit him with a steel club”

The found poem above was taken from page 4 of the story “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl. It shows the man versus man conflict between Mary, the protagonist, and her husband Sam. In the climax of the story, this conflict illustrates Mary’s anger towards Sam wanting to leave her and how Mary can’t hold her frustration anymore. In this passage, Mary is resembled as a furious and uncontrollable woman that ended her husband’s life. In the story Mary’s actions reveal that she was very calm about killing Sam as “She sat down before the mirror, tidied up her hair, touched up her lips and face. She tried a smile.” (Dahl 4) This again characterizes the characteristics of Mary in this passage. In the end, the police believed that Mary was innocent and she luckily faked it.
