Lee Friedlander: Inspiring Black and White Photography | Paul Politis Photography

The layering of foreground and background elements creates a sense of depth, enhancing the three-dimensional quality of the image. In the foreground of this photo, a person is visible, seemingly taking a photograph. Their face is partially obscured, adding an element of mystery. Behind the reflective surface, various urban elements are present, such as buildings, vehicles, and possibly other people. This suggests a lively city atmosphere. Reflection is a primary component of this photo, creating depth and inviting viewers to ponder the relationship between the subject and surroundings. The use of black-and-white highlights contrasts between light and shadow, emphasizing shapes and forms. The varied textures in the image, from the smoothness of glass to the roughness of urban surfaces, add tactile visual interest. Lastly, The lines created by buildings and objects help structure the image, leading the viewer’s gaze through the scene.

In this photo, the foreground is dominated by numerous water droplets that create a textured, blurry effect, distorting the view behind them. The Bright, colorful lights are visible in the background, with streaks of red, pink, and blue, suggesting motion and energy. This adds a lively atmosphere to the scene. The light trails form abstract lines and shapes, creating a sense of movement and vibrancy, possibly indicating traffic or city lights at night.

Both images explore urban themes but do so in contrasting ways: one through personal reflection and narrative, and the other through abstraction and vibrant color. Together, they illustrate the multifaceted nature of urban life and the varied ways in which it can be experienced and represented.

Statement of intent for set 1 photo – Blog post 8

The art of architecture

The message of my photo I want to show the Elegance and hidden beauty in geometric architecture. The message is to let people connect with the architecture around them since People are often too busy and won’t be aware of things around them. I want my audience to have a strong sense of curiosity and feel peace when looking at my photo. For inspiration, I will try to find a photographer who explores amazing architecture, and a photographer who explores the use of light and pattern in his or her photo. In my own opinion, architecture itself is an art piece, but people are too busy and don’t have the chance to be aware of the art around them.

ABSTRACTION IN PHOTOGRAPHY- blog post 3

The pictorialism movement in photography represents a set of principles about photography’s role in the world of art and a photographic aesthetic. with that being said, the Straight photography movement in photography creates a highly detailed and technical image to highlight real-world images that exemplify form, life, and aesthetics. there are also many artists influenced by the straight photography movement. For example, Edward Weston took pictures of people he met and of objects and buildings. His pictures appeared to represent the true nature of his subjects. just like the cabbage leaf below. This photo makes me feel like that. It is very advanced because of the use of black and white color. It is also very mysterious because we can’t really tell what it is If we don’t look closely at it.

not only Edward Weston but also Aaron Siskind was influenced by the straight photography movement. Aaron Siskind was one of the first photographers to combine what was known as “straight” photography, for example, the seaweed below. The use of color makes this photo’s mood look very down And very mysterious because is very Abstract and we can’t really Understand the feeling behind the photo.

Andreas Gursky made a lot of abstract art using the visual weight of patterns, colors, lines, and repetitive groupings of forms also using the straight photography movement. for example the timesquare below. This photo makes me feel very intense because of the use of Highly saturated colors, And the Dense pattern

last but not least, we have Uta Barth make abstract art By manipulating light, color, and focus, she creates images that are both abstract and evocative, inviting the viewer to reflect on the act of seeing. she also used the straight photography movement, for example, the “no title” photo below. This photo makes me feel very sad and unknown because it is very blurry and we can’t really see what is going on. And it looks like it is taken in a tear, swirling up in the eyes and unable to see anything clear.

  1. What is the purpose of rules in photography? : to guide people, on how to make a good photo
  2. What are (some of) the most important rules in photography? : main focus, each object should connect to each other.
  3. when will be a great idea to deliberately break the rules?: when you are making new rules of your own
  4. do you think it possible to break rules if you don’t know they exist: it is possible because when it comes to creativities in art, people make new rules without knowing it.
