Formal Elements in photography are things used to create a good photograph. For example, 1 element often used to make a photo is lines. Lines lead your eyes. For example the lines of a street directing your eyes towards the subject. Besides lines, there are 6 more elements, which are Shape, Pattern, Texture, Tone, and Focus. A photo that focuses on the element of shape turns objects, figures, and more into defined, stunning focal points. The element of photography pattern is often used throughout photos, especially since you often look around you and there are tons of patterns.“They help make sense of all that information through recurring and regular arrangements, and by creating a sense of harmony” (IA). Another formal element of photography is the element of Texture. The texture is “the perceived appearance of a surface” (Kolari). The texture in a photo tells you how the subject in a photo feels. If the surface in the photo is rough, then it might feel sharp and aggressive to touch. Texture can tell/add a deeper story to the photograph. Another formal element of photography is Tone. The element tone is used primarily in black & white photography because it refers to the adjustment of how bright the light is. The photographer might make the brightness lower so that the tone of the photo is more moody and more intense. Last but not least the other formal element of photography is focus. Focus is the manipulation of the camera to keep your eye on the subject of the photo. It is often used with other formal elements of photography like lines, where the photographer is positioning the lines in the photography to direct your eye to the subject, to have the lines lead to the subject.

This photo of the LBI Lighthouse tooken by me is a example of the element of photography lines because I attempt to use lines to direct the viewer’s eye up the beach towards the light house.
