Jenny Holzer is an American conceptual and installation artist whose work deploys text in public spaces across an array of media, including electronic signs, carved stone, paintings, billboards, and printed materials (hausewirth).
By analyzing these four photographs taken by Jenny, we can notice that she uses vibrate color combining with technology to present the theme” signs”. And these colors emphasizes on the signs and words. For most of her photography, she placed the main object in the middle of the frame and this can makes the ” word or sign” more stands out. And for the rest of the photography, she uses the technique rule of third, which the architecture and the words are leaning right direction. Also, the composition of these photographs is very interesting. The way that these objects are placed is very complex, it has different shapes and it can either be very regular or very intricacy.
Lawrence Weiner (born February 10, 1942, died December 2, 2021, New York) was an American conceptual artist best known for his text-based installations and radical definitions of art. He is considered a central figure in the foundation of the conceptual art movement of the 1960s.
By analyzing these photographs, we can tell that Lawrence usually uses very clean background to serve as a foil of the signs or messages, this highlight the words that on the wall, and the use of color also helps to highlight the words. For the first photographs, the large text” in the way on the way” installation seems to convey a sense of movement, direction in the viewer’s path. And for the last image “Learn to read art”: This text piece emphasized the importance of developing skills to appreciate and understand art. And the composition of the words makes these photographs more interesting and engaging for the audience to see, it has words going parallel, it also has words going downward.
