Reflection Evaluation

The artist that I’ve focused on when doing my project is Tom Hussey. Tom Hussey is an advertising and portrait photographer from American, who created a series of highly conceptual photographs titled “Reflections”, showing elderly people looking pensively at their younger self reflection in a mirror (The Phoblographer). There’s a connection between my photographs and his is because I have taken photos of people in different age groups, and the surrounding environment mainly focused on black and white street style, the theme of my photograph series “Reflection” also connect with Tom Hussey’s style. Also, Hussey’s photographs always contains the element “light” and “shade”, this is something that I also incorporate in my own photographs. When I’m taking these photographs I use the sunlight as the main light source, but since it is a black and white photographs, the light and shade contrast may not be that obvious for us to identify.

Understanding the artist intent: Exploring the artist’s biography, including their experiences, influences, techniques and framework can illuminate their intentions, and Hasse’s photos are all very close to life. When I explored taking photos this time, I also wanted to take photos that are closer to or reflect the current state of contemporary social life.

In the part of innovation, I did make changes to the style of photographs, and how reflection is conveys to the audience. For Hussey, he showed reflection just in the mirror that is typically in front of the person, and  most of the photos are very “old” and”colorful”.  What I mean by the colors here do not just refer to very vivid or colorful colors, at least they are not black and white. However, for the photographs that I have taken is all black and white style, and I have showed reflection not only in mirrors, it can also be on glass, sculptures or ornaments placed on the street, and even on windows. In terms of presenting the theme of “reflection”, my photos are relatively more diverse. Also, through analyzing these three images above, we can tell that these three people is from different age groups (3 years old baby, between 20-25 years old adult, and around 50-60 years old elder). In addition, I have used dutch angles in my photography, this makes the frame more interesting. And for the other two photography, there’s a blurring object in front of camera, making the depth of field further away. For the editing work, I crop the unnecessary space in the photography, this makes the object stand out more clearly for the audience to see. These are all of the information that is related to my photographs.

Analysis of photographer Tom Hussey

Elderly People Look At Their Younger Reflections In This Beautiful Photo Series By Tom Hussey:

Tom Hussey: Pivotal ReflectionsTom Hussey: Pivotal ReflectionsTom HusseyTom Hussey

Tom Hussey is an advertising and portrait photographer from American, who created a series of highly conceptual photographs titled “Reflections”, showing elderly people looking pensively at their younger self reflection in a mirror (The Phoblographer).

For all of these four photograph, it is a reflection relating to “memories” and “characteristics”, and these photographs is all from an eye-perspective, which makes it easier for the audience to be connected with them, especially if the person in the photo is making direct eye contact with the camera. Since Tom mostly taken photo of elderly models and then reflecting the younger models in the mirror, it can shows a society change or improvements. For example, we can make a comparison between the younger model and the elder model, whether is how they dress or how they look, it can shows how the society improvements lead to changes on people’s life.

For this series, he was inspired by a world war II veteran who said ” I can believe I’m going to be 80. I felt like I just come back from the war. I look in the mirror and see this old guy.” This motivate Hussey to take photographs of older people and younger people, and it can help them to recall memories of their early life. For these photograph, the artist uses rule of thirds, they are placed in either the right side or the left side, and the others are placed in the middle of the frame, the main focus of this photograph is on the people, so the artist has left some empty spaces for the photograph. And, there are always light and shade in the photograph, for some of the pictures is not that obvious, but it did creates a contrast of the lighting. The facial expression is very obvious, sometimes the younger has the same emotions as the elder, but for some of the photographs has difference emotions.

This photograph inspired me a lot because first the theme is very important and meaningful, it can evoke the audience’s emotions and empathy. And the mirror not only can show the reflection of a person, it can also reflect a person’s “life experience and characteristics”. So, I think it will be very cool if I’m taking similar photograph as the one that Tom Hussey has taken.

Vision and statement of intent

I want to use the mirrors to reflect mood and characteristics. The main style is black and white, and for my photography, I will focus on taking happy emotions. In this case, it can create a contrast with the style of the photography, because if we first think of black and white style, most people will think that it is very sad and deep mood, but I want to create a kind of contrast.

My favorite photo demonstrates the reflection of a person’s mood and characteristics. However, this photo is not showing a sense of happiness, so this is something that I won’t do. And, for this photography, when we look in the mirror, there is a dark side that covers the girl’s eye, and the light mostly focus on the right side.

The WORKING title of my project is Reflection from the mirror about someone’s personality, mood or characteristics. I want my audience to feel the emotions that the photography is focusing on. This can evoke the audience feeling and a sense of empathy. And I will get inspiration and develop my ideas by looking for photographs by looking at the picture above, it not only demonstrates the theme “reflection”, it also successfully conveys the emotions.
