Critique my Final Photographs

Composition: all the elements of the display support the subject?

Every element in the display plays a crucial role in supporting the subject. The strategic placement of curtains and the shelf in the first picture not only adds aesthetic appeal but also cleverly acts as leading lines guiding the viewer’s eye toward the focus point – the book on the shelf. Moving to the second picture, the deliberate arrangement of rectangles forms a pattern that not only adds visual interest but also effectively emphasizes the objects neatly arranged within the shelves, creating a sense of order and coherence. In the final picture, the intentional use of blurriness in tone and the juxtaposition of vibrant colors serve to highlight the ball and the toy, drawing attention to them amidst the surrounding elements. Each element, whether it be leading lines, patterns, or contrasts, collaborates harmoniously to reinforce and enhance the overall impact of the subject in the display.

2. Where are your eyes immediately drawn? Where do you want your eyes to go?

Upon initially viewing the photographs, my attention was immediately captivated by the compelling leading lines and the patterns within the composition. These visual elements served as dynamic guides, directing my gaze to specific points of interest. However, as I immersed myself in the images, a natural inclination emerged, drawing my eyes toward the small objects meticulously arranged on each shelf. These details not only resonated as aesthetically pleasing elements within the overall design but also conveyed a profound sense of familial warmth and homey charm. Consequently, my desire to explore the nuances of the smaller objects and their unique placements on the shelves became a focal point, as I sought to unravel the subtle narratives and personal touches that define the true essence of family and home style within the visual narrative.

3. Are there distinctions that take away the strength of the images?

Although these three photos blend well together, there is a potential difference that may weaken their collective power, which is the change in image color tone. Differences in color saturation, tone, or overall tone characteristics may cause visual dissonance, thereby affecting the cohesion of the display. To alleviate this potential drawback and enhance overall harmony, post-processing techniques such as applying consistent filters or color adjustments can be considered to unify the image. By doing so, photos can not only maintain their individuality but also showcase a more seamless and unified aesthetic, ensuring that color differences do not affect the overall intensity and visual effect of the planned exhibition. This thoughtful editing method can contribute to a more cohesive and visually pleasing presentation.

4. Story telling quality: How do they tell the story you set out to tell?

The three photos effectively weave a narrative that is consistent with the expected story. By strategically capturing the orderly bookshelves and scattered items throughout our home, these images collectively depict the overall and authentic portrayal of our family life. The carefully arranged guide lines and patterns attract people’s attention to the carefully planned parts on the shelves, highlighting precious items that contribute to our family identity. At the same time, these scattered items allow us to glimpse daily life and showcase the essence of our home life. These visual elements together tell a story that is both orderly and spontaneous, delicately depicting objects in our daily lives, and reflecting the essence of our family life in a visually convincing and authentic way. Intentional composition and careful consideration of various elements contribute to the overall story quality of the photo, successfully conveying the expected narrative.

5. Emotional Impact: How well does your audience identify with the picture? What emotions captured in your portrait will cause the audience to respond positively?

When creating my photography works, I prioritize emotional influence by evoking a deep sense of belonging and familiarity in the audience. The composition of daily necessities has been carefully designed, which evoked a sense of retro. Encourage the audience to rediscover meaning in the ordinary, cultivate a sense of nostalgia, and appreciate the simple elements that make up our life background. Selecting elements with purpose, such as books on bookshelves and everyday objects, triggered positive reactions and profound emotional connections.

My photographs got a inspiration by the Artist Oleg Oprisco (a mysterious feeling) and Tina Barney (the emotional evoke with domestic objects)

Critique

This photo by Oleg Oprisco evokes a profound sense of mystery and distance, enveloping the audience in a mysterious atmosphere, and inspiring curiosity and contemplation. A soft and gentle color palette may enhance this distant feeling, creating a dreamy atmosphere that evokes introspection. The form in composition – placing people in the center of the image attracts the audience’s visual attention and leaves a lot of impression. Oprisco’s photos take observers into an unknown realm that occupies the central stage, cultivating a fascinating sense of wonder and detachment, allowing people to contemplate the unknown stories and unexplored depths hidden within its framework. At the same time, his composition colors are also related to his vision and war, conveying a sense of sadness to the audience.

When exploring the theme I have chosen, my goal is to incorporate some of Oprisco’s techniques into the stage and composition, try vibrant colors and character body movements, and create visually impactful and emotionally resonant photos.

5. Include 4 of their images that inspire. Use visual language to describe similarities in the images (No need to critique at this stage)  :

There’s a problem with the system, so I couldn’t upload the picures. The similarities in these images is that they all used a lot of details and materials from the outside environment (for instance rain, flowers etc…).

Statement of Intent

The title of this project is “The Revealed Side”. The identity concept I want to explore with my photos is my outgoing and introverted side. I want my audience to feel a different side of me, by comparing two photos with the same theme but with different shooting techniques, composition, and tone. I will seek inspiration and develop my ideas by searching for photos, such as outdoor environment portals. Most of the pictures taken by Oprisco are set against a large area of flowers or fields. My idea is to take pictures of fields/flowers without anyone or myself hiding in a flower field.

Image Inspiration

Find some photographers/photographs or look at photography genres that inspire – not too much detail, but a general idea. You need to show that your research has purposefully informed and inspired your project.

Oprisco’s artistic vision has profoundly inspired my idea of using outdoor environments such as flowers to represent my identity. Enthralled by Oprisco’s masterful use of outdoor environments, particularly the enchanting backdrop of flowers, I found inspiration to convey my identity through nature’s beauty. Much like Oprisco, who skillfully integrates the organic elements of the outdoors into visual narratives, I aim to utilize the background of flowers as symbolic representations of my identity.

Finding a Focus

Describe the societal/cultural issue or identity concept you want to explore with your photographs:

In my exploration of identity photography, my goal is to delve deeper into the contrasting aspects of my personality – the coexistence of extroverted and introverted dimensions. Through a series of photos, I attempted to capture the essence of an extroverted self. I want to describe this from the external environment, such as the sunflowers growing freely in the fields. These photos will reflect my outgoing and sociable nature, as well as the energy I gain from social relationships. At the same time, I plan to capture the quieter and more introspective side of my identity. Similarly, through external flowers. But unlike the outgoing me, I will look for some flowers that are not very bright and contrast them with black and white tones. By juxtaposing these two aspects, I hope to create a visual narrative that reflects the complexity and harmony of multiple identities, revealing the dynamic interaction between extroversion and introversion in shaping me.

Street Photography Red photos

Evaluation of the first picture:

This photo utilizes different Street Photography techniques. Including ‘Decisive Moment’, ‘Capture gestures’, and’ Get really close ‘ These techniques together helped shape this photo better. Firstly, what can be seen is that the photo is at a very strange angle. When I was taking a photo of a person hanging on a circular ring, I chose to use different angles to capture the photo. Rather than took it from the above angle, I chose to go from bottom to top. When I was lying on the ground, I found the right moment and took the shutter. Finally, the strange angle presented is that the person’s head is between his legs, which creates a very funny effect. Secondly, this photo also applies to ‘capturing gestures’. As the person swayed back and forth, his actions also made significant changes. The image I took shows that the person’s face is filled with a smile, and his comical body movements have also brought the emotion closer to the audience, making him appear very lifelike. Finally, this photo also uses the technique of ‘get really close’. This photo clearly shows the facial expression between the legs, with a funny composition and a strong sense of connection created at close range. The second and third photo both presented the technique of “Capturing gestures” and “Get really close”. In the second picture, I acted according to the situation and captured the appearance of this old lady on the phone. Unlike ordinary people when making phone calls, this photo presents a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. The corner of the old lady’s mouth and eyes lit up in ecstasy, and her clothes matched the background color very well. The third picture added a shining point, which is the smoke exhaled from the man’s nose. Symmetric with the cigarette in hand, these two wisps of smoke added balance and memorable points to the entire picture.
