It’s Trevor Noah: Born a Crime is a biography by Trevor Noah that focuses on growing up during apartheid, a segregated and discriminated time, while facing the challenges of being a mixed child, Trevor Noah was born to a black mother and a white father, which was illegal during the time of apartheid, therefore, Trevor rarely saw his father and would pretend his mother was a stranger while in public due to his lighter complexion. The story is set in South Africa, where discrimination was at an immense level, and the government put mixed people under the impression that they were a ‘crime’ leading them to feel excluded from the communities they came from, Trevor often refers to himself as either ‘too light’ or ‘too dark’ to fit in with those around him. Throughout the story, Trevor shares many stories from his childhood and provides insights into how he grew up mixed during an isolated time
Central ideas, themes, and issues:
During our humanities classes, we explored many different ways to find central ideas, themes, and issues in our individually chosen books, This was one of our first lessons where we talked about the first few ideas of central ideas or the message the author is trying to tell us. Throughout this unit, we also read the book, “hidden figures” as a class and consistently took notes on that book as well.
Cause and effect:
There are many different ways to use cause and effect, andI found two causes in my story that I thought were big ideas. Along with the causes I used information that I thought connected with the main ideas, as well as a brief summary of the situation before compressing it into a more visual idea.
Narrative + Informational:
On this page I tracked quotes from the book in which I felt represented both narrative and informational. Narrative is commonly found in connection with characters, setting, and conflicts, and informational tells us details and ideas. Throughout my book, there are many representations of narrative and informational, and I used quotes and page numbers to represent those places.
Synthesis Page:
After I completed my book, I created a page that shows a summary and the main message I feel the author was trying to convey. I then went through post it’s I had put in my book to remember important pages, and picked quotes I felt best supported my central idea.
Thank you for reading all the way through, I hope you enjoyed.
