Definition of Street Photography:

Street photography is a genre of photography that captures candid moments in public places, focusing on everyday life and the human condition. It often emphasizes spontaneity and the interaction between people and their environment. The style aims to tell a story or evoke emotion through unposed, candid moments, highlighting the beauty and complexity of city life. Street photographers often work in busy areas, observing and recording interactions, expressions, and atmosphere on the street.

6 Concepts Street Photography:
  • Visual elements – selective focus: This technique highlights a subject by blurring the background, drawing attention to the main focal point in the scene.
  • Perspective and angle: Changing the viewpoint or angle of the shot can dramatically alter the composition and narrative, adding depth or context to the image.
  • Framing: Using elements within the scene, such as doorways or trees, to create a natural frame helps to direct the viewer’s eyes toward the subject.
  • Don’t move – fishing technique: This approach involves finding a compelling location and patiently waiting for interesting subjects to enter the frame, rather than actively moving around.
  • Get really close: Capturing subjects from a close distance can create intimacy and emphasize details, making the viewer feel more connected to the scene.
  • Capture gestures: Focusing on the subtle movements and expressions of people enhances the narrative and emotional impact of the photograph.

Statement of Intent:

Everyday Vibrance in the Hutongs

The concept I want to convey through my photographs is the vibrant and rich daily life of Chinese people. By capturing unexpected interactions and fleeting moments, I hope to reveal the beauty that exists amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. I hope that the viewer can feel a connection with the people in my photographs and evoke an emotional resonance and appreciation for humanity even in the most ordinary of settings. I will be looking for photographers who use capture gestures, framing, and other techniques to capture inspiration.
