Eyes Don’t Lie

Eyes don’t lie.

I am immediately drawn to the strong eyes of the people in these photos. The people in these photographs are strong people but with such a close up shot you can observe a sense of vulnerability that you may not see everyday. This emulates my statement of intent and the idea of letting go of strength for a single moment and ultimately not conforming to society’s beliefs.

In these photos, I have purposely positioned my subjects next to almost blank backgrounds which allows the focus to be mainly on the subjects themselves. Some of the photographs are purposefully blurred, but some are a bit less focused than I had originally intended. I liked playing around with the movement of the camera while the subject remained still. I think I want to experiment more with the colours of different lighting, such as neon complementary colours. I think the focus was decently clear as there were no distractions in the background most of the time. I think the composition is good because there’s a bit of negative space in the image while the subject is not centered which makes the photo more interesting to look at where there are a number of elements contributing to the overall shot. I was able to capture the eyes that I wanted in the image, but I was also able to do this with the lighting that I had intended in my original statement of intent. However, because the expressions of my dad and sister were relatively neutral as I didn’t request that they make any specific expressions in the photos, the pictures I’ve captured do not have the same impact that they could if I had captured my family members with expressions that better reflected the ideas I was trying to portray.

When researching photographers, I will try to find a photographer who creates shots with a slow shutter speed and specific lighting choices with people.
