I chose the short story Lamb To The Slaughter by Roald Dahl for my found poem. This book includes two conflicts that takes place between the protagonist Mary Maloney and her husband which is the antagonist. It represents Mary struggling with both internal (person verses person) conflicts and external conflict (person verses person) and builds suspense through the use of dramatic irony and different points of views. In the exposition the author sets up a scene of Mary eagerly waiting for her husband to return home. As the story arises when Mary’s husband arrives and the conflict starts to show up , the internal conflict is when they had a conversation, her husband’s actions and response became motionless and tells her he intends to leave her. This revelation creates a conflict between the two of them. Mary’s initial response was to disbelieve because of her desperate desires, and while it means her predicable imagination life was about to crumble. The external conflict is stated in the climax, when Mary’s shock shifted to anger, she caused physical harm, used a lamb leg and “strikes” it on her husbands head killing him instantly.
My poem depicts the scene of when the internal conflict occurred by describing the inner activities and mental health of Marys. The word “dazed horror” illustrates her fear towards her husband leaving her. “surprised, ridiculous” shows when she realized the whole marriage was a joke.” a relief” represents that she was trapped in this for the whole time.
In my design we can see a dead men in the middle of the poem, according to this we see that Mary’s life is surrounded by her husband . And the small pictures around shows the imagination of Mary’s, for example a pregnant women and a warm family of three. Ironic and pathetic.
Mary Maloney wasn’t prepared to take a chance.
