The Ever Flowing Hutongs
Beijing has had a rich history. From first being established in the Zhou Dynasty till now, the marks of history have not faded. The 胡同Hutongs, with it’s 四合院siheyuan, and distinctive architectural style remain a symbol of Beijing’s rich history.
The concept/story I want to tell with my photographs is…
I want to tell Beijing’s modern story, how the modern conveniences of 外卖waimai and cars intersect with the enduring architecture of the past. This is a story of energy, memory, and the beautiful blur where tradition and the present moment meet. Using long exposure, I will transform 外卖小哥 waimai delivery boys, pedestrians, and market activity into ethereal streaks of color, while the traditional stone, brick, and tile of the Hutong walls remain sharp and anchored in time.
I want my audience to feel…
I want them to feel the energy of the busy roads, and wonder at the buildings of the past.
I will get inspiration and develop my ideas by looking for photographs that…
…utilize motion blur and long exposure to abstract reality and convey the passage of time. I will study images like those of Ernst Haas where color is used to create mood and harmony and emotions.
