Introduction to Portraiture

What is Portraiture?

Portraiture, to me, goes beyond representation, it captures identity through visual narrative. Each scene holds significance, reflecting formative experiences that shape us. A strong portrait requires a thoughtfully composed background, adding depth and context to the subject’s story. Essential elements are objects, models, or settings, which must symbolically express the subject’s identity, with precise detail and quality. Yet, identity is too complex for a single image to convey fully. Instead, a sequence of photos can unravel different facets of the narrative. Identity doesn’t have to be personified; it can be represented by symbols, places, or objects. True portraiture lies in weaving these fragments into a cohesive exploration of self.
