Working the scene-Set 2

Artist Analysis:

The artist I got inspired in set 2 is Pau Buscato. Buscato has his own way and the perspective to view the scenes and express it with the concept of realism. He actually creates the sotry using the color, sudden capture of distinct movements and the single photo that he took. While viewing his works, it visualize the idea of “street photography” itself.

Image Evaluation:

The title of this work is “Hopscotch”, which is the common street game that children usually play. It is a series of photos desccribed in different techniques and ideas inside of the works-all of them are unique in each ways. The use of distinct colors and clean background is the feature that attracted me the most, and it’s one of the reasons why I chose this photographer’s style in set 2.

Vision:

My vision for this set is to express the emotions and moods that people have in typical places and, moreover capturing the scene of people living their own lives is my main concept of the set 2. The ultimate goal of this set is to show the harmony of ordinary scenes with people containing diverse way of living and feelings.  I want the people who view on my work to get inspired like I did while observing  Pau Buscato’s works.

Contact Sheet

Yellow:

In Yellow, there are the people who are living their own lives. Spotting sudden movements of people is the aspect that I wanted to focus on in this photos, even though some of them are not very clear-looking.

Green:

In the green photos, the quality and my own perspective of expressing  the vision improved than yellow, furthermore using various point of view. These effects blend the mood and the emotions of people with the busy urban area of Hutong.

Red:

These photos demonstrate the ordinary scenes of Hutong, creating the peaceful and busy mood. Although the use of color is quite distinct, the balance of sudden movement and the vision for this photo goes well with the background of Hutong.

Evaluation of an image:

This photo contrasts the person who works on his life and the people who rests in the busy urban scenes. The complex connection of red color and the elements described in the photo makes the work look more proper in  my concept of having emotions and people working on their own lives.

Working the scene-Present

I think my work may be acceptable to be presented on HS walls. On the board where we selected our best 15 photos, 2 of my works were on there, even though they went back to the other board. I think the reason my photos were moved is because the size of my work is smaller compared to other works, and there was also another photo that took the same scene as mine in black and white photo. So, I think my work is able to be presented, but next time, I’d like to increase the size of the photo and the vision of my work.

Working the Scene-Hutongs

Artist Analysis:

The artists I got inspired in the Hutong trip are Sally Davis and Alex Webb. Sally Davis uses distinct colors and elements, creating a particular mood that motivates people. Alex Webb expands people’s minds by spotting unique things and characteristics in ordinary life. In the research for the Hutong trip, I was only focused on Sally Davis’s style of taking photographs, but after I arrived there, it was way better to take photos like Alex Webb. So, I chose to use the distinct colors of Sally Davis and Alex Webb’s way to express the modern emotions and scenes of people.

Contact Sheet:

Yellow:

These photos convey my research concept, the daily lives of modern people with a sense of ancient alleys. The photo set also highlights the peaceful moment of people living on a busy day.

Green:

This is similar to the yellow photos’ theme, but this work improved more in its quality. By using the different directions in taking photos, the concepts get along with the photos well and point out the specialness of the theme itself.

Red:

These photos show the calmness of the urban area and, moreover, the life of people living in Hutong. The peaceful mood goes well with expressing the ordinary scenes of people in ancient places, showing the emotions and feelings that they have.

Image Evaluation:

Our concept in the Hutong trip is to show the Chinese people’s daily lives including the ancient and modern background.  The luggage and colors create an antique mood, and the detailed features of people and the elements are expressed in the photo. These features blend my own perspective and ideas well with the scenes of Hutong.

Working the scene-Research

Definition of Street Photography:

Street photography is one of the genres of photography. In street photography, there are scenes of everyday life since we’re taking photographs of people who we don’t know in public places. Because of these features, the output of street photography is pretty different compared to other ways. Sometimes, street photographers wait till the best movements of people are demonstrated. The use of color is white and black, or just colors. They use their own perspective and vision to make street photography.

Statement of Intent

The title of this project is “The Doors”. The concept I want to tell with my photographs is the beautifulness of ordinary scenes. I want my audience to feel how it’s different by spotting some typical elements in photographs, blending them into our own perspective, and make into some “artifacts”. I will get inspiration by looking for photographs that use different colors and encourage people to expand their thoughts of mind.  Or I’ll get inspiration from the pictures that develop my mind and show clear reflections on their topics and elements.

Welcoming our fear

Street photography is taking pictures of ordinary scenes with people’s movements. So, I worry about getting negative looks from people while photographing them.  However, I think I can overcome that since I gained many skills to reduce fears in photography class. I hope this Hutong trip will encourage me to expand my perspective on street photography and, furthermore get to know other street photographers who have unique visions.
