My vision in this set is mainly about the lines. Straight and precise. In contrast to set 1, I tried to show an accurate and dark mood in my set 2 work. Nick Albertson is one of the photographers who had his main element as a line. He also inspired me while I was taking photo set 2. His feature is using household materials and taking a picture with clear patterns and lines. For example, in his work “Masking Tape,” we can see the stripes organized well, which creates a pattern. I picked these yellow pictures because, in set 2, I focused more on patterns and lines than the focus. In the yellow photo set, I selected pictures that have parallel lines or horizontal patterns. For green, I chose pictures that have more well-shown lines. Finally, in red edits, I picked 3 pictures about lines and 2 pictures about patterns.

My vision for this set is related to Uta Barth.  I used lights and the simple things in my work, wanted people to feel warm by looking at my photographs. I mostly took the picture in out focus, just like Uta Barth’s photography.  For the evaluation of her photographs, she shows us her thoughts and her perspective in her works.  Also, she usually make a work with out focus. Because of that effects, her photographs look warm and creative. I want to take a picture like her work, a work which can expand or inspire one’s mind.  The evaluation of my “red” image is overall quite impressive.  I think I showed some features such as tones and shapes, that Uta Barth preferred in her works and my own perspective.

Photo Set

I chose Uta Barth. One of her characteristics is that first, she usually takes picture with blurred, out-focused effects. So in her pictures, we cannot see the parallel lines and definite shapes commonly. Second, instead of stiff lines, she creates wave by the lines in her photography. Third, by giving the change to focus, it makes her photo as an abstract photography. Fourth, Her tone is mostly bright, but in some photos, the darkness makes the photo antique-looking. Fifth, the shape shown in her works are generally round and smooth.Similar to the style of John Baldassari’s WRONG, I like Uta Barth’s style as she shows her work with her own different perspective of the ordinary scene. Blurring the focus causes the simple element into some creative result. I’d like to adapt her style and take a picture that makes people to think about the message of the photography. I was also inspired by her work as I kept thinking about the idea of it.

I selected this image in particular because of the mood it shows to me. I was surprised by the fact that the blurred picture can be beautiful while watching Uta Barth’s picture. I think the most important element in this picture is focus. Using the out-focus for taking this picture is the precise way to abstract people. Moreover, the effect causes people to feel warm in the photography. I also think that tone is another important element in this picture. The component that composes this photography is the slightly dark tone and warm, reddish shade. These features are why I chose this photo.

Researching the starting point

Aaron Siskind, Jerome, Arizona 21, Metmuseum, Denny Moers, Gus Kayafas, 19th September 2024

In this photography, we are able to see some pictorialism  movement. Then, what kind of pictorialism movement it shows in this photography? In the photography, a photographer tries to define one’s own mind to us, who see the works. It’s idea is quite similar to the abstract photography since it is also another way to show themselves as photographer. On the other hand, what is the straight photography movement shown in this photography? The details of  the texture and the shapes are the features of straight photography. It’s pretty different to Pictorialism. The biggest difference is pictorialism doesn’t focus much about the details of the element itself. However, Straight photography shows every little parts of the element. Usually, straight photography is popular than the Pictorialism. I think the reason is people generally prefer the clean focus and tone while they’re watching the photography.

Edward Weston and Aaron Siskind is been influenced by the straight photography movement-clear focus, stiff patterns and texture of the elements that they took. Also, they both make the photo with white and black filters, so we cannot see any various color in their works. This effect makes the photography to focus more about small details. Quite different to these photographers, Andrea Gursky and Uta Barth took photos in colors. Andrea Gursky is the photographer who makes an photograph like an artwork-especially Fauvism, which uses a definite color. Uta Barth takes picture in mostly out-focused ones. She uses tone and the focus mainly. Even though these photographers are similar to Pictorialists in some way, I think they’re still abstract photographers because they, especially Uta Barth inspired me to think a lot about her message inside the photography that she took.

Definition of Abstract Photography

How we define the abstract photography? I think the photograph that represents author’s mind in ordinary scenes is an abstract photograph. It may be the out-focused picture, or the mixture of parallel lines or shape. The blurred effect is one of the most common elements that abstract photographers use since it’s easy to demonstrate their mind or the thoughts they have in the photography.  As a result, my own definition of abstract photography is the one that makes people to feel about the photographer’s thinking.

Statement of Intent

Reflection of water

The message of my work is to think about the situation again, by reflecting it. By thinking the problem again, we are able to gain a solution in an unexpected way.  I want the audience to feel comfortable by this colors and nature, and don’t worry about much of their problem. For inspiration, I will try to search more about the author’s pictures, and experience about other element’s uses in the photography. I want to find the photography with warm and out-focused. In my opinion, don’t be too depressed about the current circumstance. Take a time and than go forward again.

In this blog post, I’l describe which photo shows what elements one by one. After that explanation, there will be an description about which photograph is difficult to take or easy to take(best represented). First, Photo 1 and 2 represents shape the best. Photo 3 ‘s element is texture. 4 and 5 photographs have the element of pattern-or the lines. Photo 6 is about shape. Photo 7 is the mixture of pattern, shape and lines. Photograph 8 and 9 are showing the element of pattern. Photo 10 and 11 is about the photographer’s focus. Finally, photo 12 is about the tone or the pattern. The one that worked the best is number 11. This is so beautiful scene which has a lot of elements, so I think it is the best picture to represent elements. On the other hand, number 10 is the most difficult photograph to find in ordinary places. Since I took pictures in horizontal focus, it was hard to find that geometry in the picture.

Analysis of a photograph

In this blog post, I’ll describe about one of the abstract photographers and the features of their photographs. First of all, I chose Uta Barth. There’s 3 main features in his abstract photographs. In his picture, the tone is usually quite dim and blurred looking like an impressionism artworks. From that reason, the people can notice that the photographer usually takes the picture in out focused way like  John Baldassari’s “WORNG” picture. Moreover, judging from his photographs, I think he focuses a lot in the use of curved lines more than just vertical-or horizontal-lines. However, he includes a vertical line to divide the scene, which is another way to expand the imagination of the viewers. There’s the pattern of curved lines and the rectangular shapes.   Since he Here is one of Uta Barth’s pictures. His named it as , but I want to name this picture “Wave” since the material’s movement and the tone makes this photo seems like  a white wave.

Formal Elements

What does Formal elements means in photography? It’s 6 elements that form the photography. In different ways, they assist what author is trying to define in their photos.  It might be the fundamental things that composes the photography, or the complex things that makes people curious about it. Showing the several elements in the picture represents the photographer’s idea in the work. In this paragraph, I’ll describe 6 elements and an example of each element.

First element is line. This is usually vertical, but sometimes it curves and make the scene. In the photos, by using lines, people are able to not only see the picture in different perspective but also satisfythe aim of the abstract photography. Also, the horizontal line creates divided scene and the direction of freshpoint of view.

Second element is shape. It can be anything such as an object, nature, or person. Sometimes photographers see the world in different shape and defines it as the result of abstract photography. There is generally 2 types: the shape that has curvy lines or vertical lines. This element easily blends with other elements such as pattern, which is the third element.

Third element is repetition, or also known as pattern. The repeated pattern iscreating a rhythm in picture and furthermore, it may cause the optical illusion. Sometimes, this element is monotonous, but the optical illusion is the importantfeature that pattern has. Making the phenomenon gives people fresh sensation.

Fourth element is texture. This element is common in the photo which took a various materials. For instance, a cotton gives people fluffy feeling of texture. If it relates with shape, people are able to concentrate with the photo better. Unlike other elements, this is mostly about touching among the 5 senses.

Fifth element is value, or tone. The shade includes in this element, and this judges the atmosphere of the photography. The dark shade creates gloomy mood, and the bright light like sunlight creates the scene of life and nature. I think the darkest value is the picture taken from night and the brightest value is sunlight.

Sixth element is focus. I think this is the most important idea in photography. By changing the focus, the people can expand their imagination and if the author don’t get a focus right, it can be a positive photo. For example, we previously did our”WRONG” project and in the work, the picture with blurred and not focused well is also pretty.

As you can see in this blog post, there are 6 elements which are the foundation of abstract photography. Then, will an image represents only one element? In my opinion, I think it’s not true. Of course there might be the photo that only shows one element, but it’s hard to take the picture in that way. Since we took picture in the specific places-school, home, or other places-the result of the photography would be the mixture of several elements’ harmony. Moreover, I guess every element relates with each other and makes a one photo.

Starting Point

Abstract photography can be defined as capturing images in which the subject isn’t the most interesting element. Albert Renger-Patzsch and Aaron Siskind photographed the ordinary to reveal their beauty. Uta Barth reversed the typical use of the camera, shooting out of focus and Andreas Gursky photographs the repetition of elements.

In this paragraph, I’d like to describe my thoughts about this statement and abstract photography. I think this statement explains the reason and the subject abstract photograph has. In abstract photography, photographers are focusing defining the ordinary world we see into something  extraordinary in the photos. By using the movements or the lights in taking pictures, the people who see that are able to improve their imaginations from that . For example, if there is a abstracted photo in the material(or wall) of reddish color, people would wonder about what is that material. Like this ,abstract photographies are improving people’s depth of mind by describing the motivations of the photograph in photographer’s way.
