Final identity image and evaluation

These images represent the feelings of individuals. The feeling of their loneliness and happiness are both seen in this triptych. The technique of side angle is used to see the mood more directly and the whole gesture. This triptych can be improved by using more unique techniques to show different gestures of people and their emotions.

Analyzing an artist

Henri Cartier Bresson–Street photographer

Analysis

Cartier-Bresson’s approach to photography was rooted in composition, spontaneity, and storytelling. He prefers black and white images that emphasized geometry, contrast, and balance. His influence on street photography was capturing a moment in motion while maintaining a geometrically organized composition and minding the surroundings. I like the style because it provides a realistic feeling to the audience by showing the decisive moments of individuals. I will adapt his style to my own photograph by capturing decisive moments of people walking or standing still in nature with their emotions or feelings.

Evaluate one image

This photograph represents a decisive moment of a man walking towards the middle of the road. It provides a peaceful and soft mood. The man is illustrated alone, so we could feel the loneliness inside his mind through his movements.

Statement of intent

“The movement of people”

The message of my sets for street photography will be to represent individuals and their surroundings, specifically their movements, and to capture the beauty of nature. Movements can be not only them walking, but also them standing with emotions or feelings. I want my audience to feel both the actual movement of their bodies and the movement inside their bodies. I will get inspiration and develop my ideas by looking for street photographers that take photographs of people’s movements in nature. I will explore and express the individuals and their surroundings by taking photographs of people’s movements without them noticing in nature and also some at school.

Definition of street photography

Definition: Street photography is a genre of photography that records everyday life in a public place. The very publicness of the setting enables the photographer to take candid pictures of strangers, often without their knowledge.

There are the three main factors of street photography: light, background, figures. High-contrast lighting is great for street photography, because it simplifies scenes, produces interesting shadows, and can add plenty of mood. The background of street photography affects the composition of the frame. Figures in street photography add emotion to the shot. Just like colors can influence a scene, the look on someone’s face also provides a lot of context and emotion.

Content

This photograph is describing a lady smoking in a dark area by herself and sitting in front of a table with a cup of drink on it. As we can see in her expressions, the girl is unhappy, a sense of depression or loneliness. Her gesture of holding a cigarette in her hand and looking down provides a soft and comfortable mood for the audience to feel the struggle in her heart.

Style & Genre

The color of this photograph is mainly black except the white color of the cup, this shows a contrast between light and dark, which represent the main emotions of the lady being lonely, worried, and loss of hope.

Photographic Attributes

The point of view of this photograph is from the opposite direction where the lady is sitting, to directly see her emotions or feelings from her facial expressions. The cup on the table caught my eye first, then the cigarette in her hand.

Meaning/Intent

This photograph makes me feel comfortable and a little bit lonely. The contrast between the lighting represents a peaceful mood of being alone, providing a sad feeling.
