I consider myself to be about 55% humanist. As an atheist, I disagree with the parts of humanism involving the Catholic Church and I disagree with the idea of our bodies being unique. In my eyes, every animal body is unique– You hardly see exact duplicates of one another. Perhaps the core may be similar in some way or another, but overall, they are different from one another. I also don’t only disagree with secularism because it keeps the belief of the Catholic Church, but I also sort of disagree with the idea of relearning the world through ancient texts. I prefer to learn what the world is like through my own eyes, through others’ eyes–in essence, in all perspectives. On the flip side, however, “Individualism,” I do heavily agree with. The idea of having that freedom to choose what you want to be in the future, to be able to rise and fall on the social class; I do like the sound and idea of that. In the future, I want to become who I want to be. I don’t want to let anyone else choose for me. The aspect of the freedom of choice is what sticks out for me in the area of “individualism.” Lastly, education for all is something I’ve heard people blabber about for years. For me personally, I like to hold a belief that everyone has their own knowledge to share that is unique to themselves. I believe that anyone, no matter who you are, can make a significant change in the world. That’s why I believe in education for all. Therefore, for all the reasons up above, that is why I believe myself to be about 55% humanist.
