Bagdasarian, Adam. “My Side of the Story.” First French Kiss, London, Walker,
2003.
The story I chose is, My Side of the Story, by Adam Bagdasarian. The main conflict of this story is external, which means it is not a conflict about an idea or something but might be a fight between someone. The main conflict is Human Verses Human which is the main character fighting with is brother “Skip” and Skip never getting punished by that. The main character always gets bedevil by Skip and Skip really enjoys it, so the start of the story Skip sticks a roll of scotch tape on his hair. The main character says that “He had done it because he was fourteen and had the great good fortune to be blessed with a little brother he could bedevil at will. ” which means that Skip really enjoys it and did it on purpose. The main character wrote that, “In those days justice looked a good deal like my mother…It was comforting to know that in a matter of seconds my mother would hear the evidence, weigh the evidence, and punish my brother. ” Which means that Skip bedeviling the main character have been for a long time. One of the words we need to focus on that quote is “In those days” which tell us that Skip just started to get punished by her mother in those days, but not all the time. In addition, we need to know that a mother would not want to punish her children by hitting them but by telling them that it is wrong, but it does not really work The main character does not fight back against his brother but decides to tell his mother to punish his brother. At the end of the story, he said that, “The part I didn’t understand was the part about why my brother, who had started the whole thing by putting Scotch tape on my head, hadn’t been punished.” Before he write this quote down, he was punished by his father because he thinks the main character is overreacting and did not really care about who started this problem.
My poem informs the reader that the main character’s brother skip bedevils him all the time and the main character’s mother sometimes punishes Skip so the main character starts to find his mother and screams. “he would not scream less than ‘The house is on Fire!’ or ‘Somebody stole your car!'” Which means that he thinks the Main character is overreacting so he punishes him. So the main character starts to question himself, “I didn’t understand why my brother, who had started the whole thing hadn’t been punished.” Which he decides to fight back by breaking his brother’s basketball trophy. I left the last sentence of the story in my poem which is “With a little luck, my brother would want to tell Pop about it.” which means that his brother is getting punished by his father because of his “overreacting”.
