Which elements are best represented in the pictures below?

1.

In the first image, lines are represented . An imaginary line in the middle bisects the photograph into 2-with half of the image going to a brown staircase, the other half to a cream colored marble. This line separates the 2 strongly contrasting colors, showing stability and power.

2.

In this second image, shape is shown well. The small clock on the upper right hand side of the corner features a geometric shape-a square. The tone is also included in the composition, with the subject being darker than the surroundings, adding a somewhat mysterious mood to the photograph.

3.

This third image mainly focuses its composition on the texture and patterns of the stuffed toy. The texture features a soft, fuzzy fabric, which conveys a comfortable and pleasant emotion. The pattern of the fabric sticking out is more organic and randomized, which adds upon the the feeling of security the object brings to the viewer.

4.

The fourth image focuses on lines and tone. There are 3 straight dark lines dividing the photograph into 4 parts, with the thickness of the lines also differentiating-from the thinnest at the bottom to the thickest at the top. The tone is also different between the right and left side, with the right side featuring a slightly darker tone, while the left side contains a bright light and tones. The dark lines are also exaggerated by tones, each one containing an extreme version of the black tone.

5.

The major elements in this photograph are the shapes. Similar to the third image, the 2 pillars divide the image into 3 parts. The shapes of the pillars are more geometric, making the photograph balanced. I added in a little bit of light from the light sources on both ends of the photo, adding some tone and improving its composition.

6.

This image features the elements of shape and pattern. The circular coin located in the center of the photograph, with it being the subject and the image focused on it, taking on a calm and steady feeling. The image is also symmetrical due to the circle, showing its role in the composition of the image. The coin also has some patterns around its center, which shows order.

7.

The obvious formal component in this image are lines. 3 straight lines are included inside the image, which intercross with each other at 2 points. These lines keep the image simple, not adding complexity but keeping its composition steady and in order.

8.

The elements in this photograph are shapes and patterns. The image consists of multiple circles positioned across the photo. This geometric shape keeps the image simple while showing unity and structure. On the other hand, all of these circles together form a pattern, which makes the image more balanced overall.

9.

Almost identical to the previous image, the elements featured in this photograph include shapes and patterns. The photograph includes multiple rectangle like shapes. This type of geometric shape conveys the feeling of strength and order. The multiple rectangles together form a pattern, which gives the image a better structure, improving composition, and gives off a feeling of balance and comfort.

10.

This image features metro tracks, and uses the elements of lines extremely well. The 2 most significant lines in the image separate the tracks with the platform and going throughout the photo. They make contrast between the colors of the different regions, and blend in within the photograph well to make its composition more natural.

This image focuses on multiple elements, including lines, tone, as well as texture. The 2 lines on each end of the photograph divide the river with the riverbank, balancing the composition of the photo. The tone is represented through the shadows and lighting of the image. The left hand side’s water is covered in a shadow a building in front of it creates, making a darker tone, while the sunlight shines in the rest of the image-a brighter tone. This also creates contrast in the photo. Lastly, the wind created gentle ripples in the water, adding texture to it, and gives off a feeling of calmness.

12.

This image portrays the element of pattern, containing organic lines of different thickness to form a larger pattern overall.

In summary, most of these images were successful. Images with lines were typically the most successful, and were the most similar with the drawings given. For example, #1,#4, and #10 were all almost identical to the originals. I think this may be due to the fact, that lines are the most common element around us, therefore making them easier to find. As evidence, some not so common line combinations were less successful-#7 couldn’t imitate the thickness of the lines of the original, the same with #4. Photographs with patterns were the hardest for me. Even though I was able to imitate fairly well in #8 and 9, the more complex patterns were hard to find in the environment I was in. As an example, #12 couldn’t feature the tidy and organized straight lines. This may be because of the many overlapping components of the original drawing, which are unlikely to be found in the everyday life.
