This photo features multiple pipes, with a building at the back. It focuses on the patterns on the left hand side, the lines formed by the pipes, as well as the structure and composition, which features depth and a pipe dividing and bisecting the photograph. The photography techniques I used in this photo included perspective, in which I placed my camera to capture multiple components of the area together and to blend them in naturally to create the oppressive feeling mentioned before. I also wished to include emotions of devastation, loneliness, and want to use to rusted elements to show time’s passing.

This photo features a narrow alleyway in the 798. I used the techniques of lighting and leading lines in the photograph, with the end of the alley being light up, while it itself staying dark and gloomy, creating a feeling of mystery and timelessness. The leading lines of the alley also lead the viewer’s attention to the lighting, making the composition natural and logical. The editing techniques I used in this photo were cropping and using shadows to make portions of the image darker while emphasizing others.

This image features a previous industrial region of the 798’s remains. I made the image sharp on focus to capture the details and make the image more abstract. I also used the element of texture on the tower-like structures to show the rust and decay of the structure, giving off the emotion of loss and neglect, also showing the suppression over the region in previous regions. I also added exposure to the purely white background (negative space), making the subject more appealing.

This image features a person walking down a small dark alley. I made the person stay away from the center of the image, being in the right third of the image, enhancing the composition of the photo by adding in other elements, which combined make the image look more natural casual. I thought about the use of light in the image, making the rest of the image dark, keeping only the light which landed on the person walking, showing isolation and seclusion. The focus also includes the full scene which was given at the time, which adds depth to the story and creates a sense of calmness and stability.

This image features a black and white image of a graffiti wall and a background of pipes and a building. In the image, patterns dominate. The graffiti wall is equally spaced into 3 parts, the pipes are ordered neatly, and the building on the back features identical windows, with the organization bringing a feeling of oppression and showing the repressive society and how it has changed with the contrast of the graffiti. The lines in the image-the pipes, divide the graffiti and building in the background in 2 different parts.

This image features contrast as a main point of interest. The colors of the graffiti differ from one another and, combined in one image, give off a calm and relaxing feeling to the audience. The patterns formed by the lines of the building divide the photo and also give off the same feelings.

This image features a person leaning on a fence which leads to a basketball pitch. I used the patterns of the fence, and emphasized them by putting focus on them. The overall image is blurred, a more pictorialist touch, which adds on to the feeling it conveys, a negative isolation. It shows the lack of opportunity and chances people get in society. The lighting I used in the image is also darker, showing the despair and powerlessness in the situation.

This image is a classical one showing power and authority. The patterns of the building are identical rectangle-like shapes, which I have made to show and symbolize decay and change in society over time. The focus of the building and exposure given to the background also convey such feeling. The dark tone of the photograph also shows control and lack of individuality.

From this image, I really wanted to capture movement and the flow of time and society. I included multiple different components in the photo and a lighter tone to show hope for the future and all the pieces which work together which let the city to function. I also added in perspective and depth to to link the image to our daily lives.

This image focuses on the texture of the wall and the focus on the moss. The image features a sharp focus, making details stand. The composition of the image features the moss in the center of the image, making it stand out with its color contrast and texture difference compared to the orange wall behind it. A camera skill I used it the image is lighting, finding a place in the shadow under a roof to take the photo, adding on a depressing mood to the photograph.
