Deleting 365 Groups

When ISB first started using Office 365, anybody could create a 365 group. Turns out people really like creating groups! Now we have around 500 groups on 365.

The ICT Office is working with EdTech to reduce and rationalise the usage and quantity of groups.  Clint and Jim are working on consolidating all ES groups into the ‘ES 365’ group.  I’m sure MS and HS will follow in the coming months.

Now, if you ever created a group and you no longer want or use it, then we would really appreciate it if you could delete it.  To delete a group:

Login to 365 and click on ‘People’, Click ‘Owner’ under the ‘Groups’ Menu:

Even if you didn’t create a group, please check!  As people move on group owners are assigned to new hires.  So you might be an owner of a group and not currently know anything about it!  You might find a gold mine of information.

After you have deleted your group(s) by default it’s retained for 30 days. After 30 days, the group and associated content is permanently deleted and cannot be restored.

Ok, you deleted a group, now people are complaining that they lost their content, assuming the 30 days isn’t up, you can restore the group:
