MSND Egeus Characterization CER:

In the original play of Midsummer Night’s Dream, the character Egeus, Hermia’s father, is shown to be demanding and uncaring. According to the text,Egeus said to Theseus: “My gracious duke, be it so she; will not here before your grace consent to marry with Demetrius, I beg the ancient privilege of Athens, as she is mine, I may dispose of her: which shall either to this gentleman or to her death, according to the law” (lines 39-45).(My gracious duke, is she does not agree to my orders, I ask you to allow me to uses the laws of Athens, since she belongs to me, I can use and get rid of her: which is to either marry Demetrius or have her executed.) This piece of dialogue from the original script shows that Egeus is demanding Hermia to marry Demetrius by threatening her with death. Another example of this is when Hermia speaks to Theseus, “I would my father look’d but with my eyes” (line 56).  (I wish my father would see both of them the same way I see them as.) This direct quote from the text represents how inconsiderate of a father Egeus is. He did not care at all about what Hermia though of his arrangements. Egeus became the primary cause of the conflict between the main leads due to his dictating and unaccepting nature.
