Logo assessment-Ray Yun

Client Name: RY yoga studio

Audience: people who are interested in yoga&people who want to start yoga

For several weeks, we’ve learned about designing logos, like how to design, how to make logos more effective, and the image of several companies. I decided to make a yoga company’s logo based on this knowledge. I used both Affinity designer and photo. The designer is to create a general logo, and the picture is for making a mock so that we could know our logo is beneficial for several products.

Brainstorming : when we think about yoga, it requires flexibility, health, and mental health. Therefore, I tried to put these things into my yoga company logo. Especially if I really have to make a company, the logo should attract people interested in yoga and people who didn’t seem interested in it.

I got inspiration from dribble.com, and I gathered in the padlet.

https://isbeijing.padlet.org/rayyun/vrdds1veadbbucpm

In the padlet, there are several example logos for inspiration, and these logos are simple and not massive. However, we could see the logo clearly, and we could know the character of these logos.

I sketched several logos, and I chose three designs indicating yoga companies.

We could know all three logos indicate a logo company. The first logo has a unity that uses only one font that looks cool. Also we could understand it means a yoga symbol so that people are able to realize this is a yoga company. However, it doesn’t indicate the full company name, ‘RY’. The second logo indicates both the yoga symbol and the company name. Also, it only used one type of font so that it has unity. Nevertheless, that font doesn’t reveal the yoga company because it looks classic font. For example, some beauty salon could be more relative with the classic type of font, however, yoga company is not relative with that type. The last one also indicates the company name and yoga symbol, but we could see that it used two varieties of fonts so that it doesn’t have unity. However, I think the last one is the best result.

For the font, I tried to screenshot the font from other website, however, if I just typed what I want and just screenshot it, it didn’t look clear, and I have to fix and change the size the words seperately So, I just downloaded the whole font, so that it is useful to type what I want. I also downloaded the yoga symbol

Peer&teacher feedback: For feedback, to indicate the yoga company, font and symbol is so significant that could make companies’ image different. For example, the classic font could not represent the yoga character. Therefore, the teacher said that choosing a font is essential.

Final result: I used a water bottle to make a mockup, and I used the third logo to make a mockup because I think a yoga company could give a water bottle to audiences. When we look at the water bottle, it seems simple and clear.

If you can’t see clearly here is the pdf file so you can see it properly.

Review your design brief. How effectively have you addressed the criteria of the brief? Have you responded to the keywords? Is anything unclear or missing?Review the “logo design top tips”. Is your design aligned with this advice? What needs to be improved?

The name of this company is ‘RY yoga’ company, which is from my Initial name (Ray Yun). When I reviewed the “logo design top tips,” I think my design aligned with this advice. I used both logo marks and logotype. It is because I referred the font to another website, and I put the yoga symbol to indicate the identity of the yoga company. I tried to make it the same size with letters and pictures because it looks complicated and unclear for the logo.

Set goals for the lesson. What specifically do you need to improve to refine and complete your design?

For improvement and limitation, I think I have to do more sketches to find more good ideas about yoga. I want to refine using different font types because yoga requires a lot of things such as flexibility, strength, mental health, etc. However, it is hard to put all of these requirements into one logo. So if we keep using a different types of fonts and options, these could indicate identity in another method. Another limitation of our project is that I used more than one font. This triggers that viewers could be confused because it doesn’t have unity. Therefore, I think if I have a chance to make a logo again, I would use only one font so that other people could not be confused and we could have unity.

Lyrics&Types-Ray Yun

I used procreate to my project, referring to the song ‘Rockin’ around the Christmas tree’. I chose to use the song ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ because I thought this song could communicate the Christmas mood, and the lyrics are neither long nor short, so it was helpful to put in my poster.

Because Christmas represents colors green, red and white, I tried to put the background as green, decoration and some presents as red, and make a snow effect with white.

My typography is that I made a snow effect on each letter that we could quickly realize it is winter and Christmas.

I referred to this typography from dafont.com to find typography that is related to winter and Christmas. There were several examples of winter typography. I tried to write with 3D effect, but the project would look complicated and unorganized if I did it. I used procreate, which is with apple pencil, so the size of letters is not exactly the same as other letters, so I didn’t put a 3D effect. Instead of the 3D effect, I tried to make the letter thicker to demonstrate that the snow piled up on the letters.

I think I used hierarchy which means if we first look at the poster, we could see the lyrics first, then we could see other things such as background and other decoration (present, Christmas tree). Also, I used color, one of the design elements, because even though I used only a few colors, these colors could communicate the project’s theme.

Strengths about my project are that my project well communicates the Christmas and winter mood.

Weaknesses are that I didn’t set the primary option properly, my project doesn’t look clear and becomes a slight blur.

Feedback: He said that I have to put more different colors so that it is more colorful and could make more Christmas mood.

Tone – Design Element Poster Ray Yun

What is the role of elements & principles in graphic design?

Elements & principles is significant in graphic design. It is more effective to communicate about the picture and upgrade the appearance of the picture.

What is this design task all about?

This is about tone, which makes the mood of the picture, but it is also abstract.  Because I want to make an abstract picture, I only used one color and made it as simple as possible.

Why did you design your illustration this way?

I made a shadow effect, and gradient effect and the reason why I did these ways is that it communicates this project was for ‘tone.’. I only used black color, because if I use several colors, it might look like the graphics are complicated and confused with my illustration. Also, my peer gave feedback that I have to use only one color to communicate this s poster is about tone. Even though I used only black, I made three levels of brightness so that one side is really dark, the middle part is one-way transparent, and another side is totally transparent, which is just white color.

Ray’s Graphic Design

-What is Graphic design?

Designing with Graphic

-What’s my most memorable experience designing (or creating) something? Why?

I designed some poster to promote something when I was middle school student in South Korea.

-What would I like to get better at doing as a designer? (Eg drawing, presenting, digital design, fabrication, photo-editing, sharing, collaborating, etc)

I think collaborating is the most important thing because even though I’m good at drawing, if I’m not good at collaborating, that is a not good product.

-What do already do pretty well? (Eg drawing, presenting, digital design, fabrication, photo-editing, sharing, collaborating, etc)

I think I’m good at photo-editing. Especially, editing some back ground colors.

Welcome to Your New Blog!

When you blog you create posts and posts are categorised according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you. If you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:

  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category.
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This can include text, images, embedded videos from Dragons’ Tube or elsewhere. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
