Engineering – Blogpost 4

Final blogpost on the waterwheel:

Our waterwheel is able to function properly because of the way our wheel turns effectively and when water starts to hit it, it runs very efficiently. Our straw where the water comes out of was originally not strong enough to keep the wheel moving smoothly, so we had to change it out for a larger piece of plastic pipe. Once that was installed our wheel was able to keep turning continuously, under the pressure of the now stronger stream of water.
In terms of improvement, we could have glued the sticks of the wheel better into the bottle lid but we were at high risk of burning ourselves to we had to be careful. If we had noticed that a small straw would not work well enough, we could have swamped it out for the tube before we glued it on. However, we did not foresee that our small straw would not be able to generate enough water pressure for the wheel to turn efficiently.

This product did not negatively affect the environment because we used recycled materials to build our waterwheel.

Blogpost – Engineering Post 3

In today’s class Rhea and I completed our waterwheel after struggling with the ice lolly sticks and bottle caps for a while. However, we realised that the straw we had used was not the correct size so we had to take it out and replace it with a thicker straw to allow more water to flow through so that the wheel will be able to turn more effectively.

Engineering – Blog Post 2

In today’s class Rhea and I drew out separate models for how our product will look.
In the next class, we will begin working on part 1 of. our waterwheel (the turning mechanism.) We will make it out of four ice lolly sticks, a rod, five bottle caps, and part of a 1 litre bottle where the turning device will be placed. To keep it all together we will be using a glue gun to keep materials together and in place.
The techniques used during the construction process of part 1 will be using the glue gun without burning ourselves and making sure materials are in their correct places.

Rhea and I will be designing a waterwheel. The intended audience would be someone interested in waterwheels or how we show the transfer of kinetic energy to mechanical movement. The purpose of building this is to demonstrate how the paddles that are being rotated by water is showing the conversion from kinetic energy to mechanical movement.
The product is relatively simple to create and construct and would be relatively environmentally friendly because we will be using the materials available in the design labs.

Here is a video that explains how to design a simple yet efficient waterwheel model:

We will be able to adjust the size and appearances and/or aesthetics of it if we please.

First Socratic Seminar Reflection

What I did well was coming prepared for the Socratic Seminar. I had annotated each chapter carefully picking out pieces of information that linked with other parts of the novel. I attempted to keep the discussion moving, however, there were a few times when I was unable to contribute to the conversation. What I still need to work on for the next Socratic Seminar would be to involve the other participants in the discussion more often. Instead of asking for their opinions, I stayed silent which I should not do in the future. My goals for next time would be to use more formal language and not use filler words, and to include others more often. To achieve the first goal, I will prepare my answers in a detailed way in advance, and to achieve my second goal, I will not take over the discussion and I will call on others to contribute their opinions.

Reading reflection #2

I returned my previous library book without finishing it so I have started a new one.  I abandoned my previous novel because I thought it had a terrible plotline and the characters were boring.

New book title: Goodnight Mister Tom

So far, I have read up to page 31. The characters that I have encountered are Mr Tom and Willie Beech. The novel is set during the Second World War, and near the beginning of it, Willie is evacuated to the countryside. Willie’s mother requested that he lives by the church so he is adopted by the man who lives right by the church’s graveyard, Mr Tom.

Reading Reflection Number 1

The book I am currently reading is called ‘Dark Triumph’ and it is a romance novel.                                                                                              I would describe this novel as mysterious with a hint of romance, but not a lot. The story contains a lot of graphic details such as blood and gore and a couple of explicit scenes as well.

The story is based at some point during the 15th century in Brittany. The main character is a young woman named Sybella D’Albret. She lives in an unpleasant environment with her father, D’Albret, and her brother Julian. Everyone in the palace thinks that Sybella is loyal to her father, however, we learn that this is not the case and that she is actually trying to rescue a prisoner who her father plans to kill. The prisoner is a duchess’ strongest warrior named Beast and is in dire need to return to the Duchess. After Sybella escaped with the Beast they face an array of different challenges.

SWOT Analysis Table

Strengths

–      If I start reading I can read for quite a long time.

Weaknesses

–      I don’t reach much

–      Not that good at spelling

Opportunities

–      Read different types of books

Threats

–      Dyslexia ( makes reading not so fun, that’s why I don’t read much )

One target: By reading more often, I would like to be able to improve my vocabulary and spelling. I will know when I have achieved this when I read over my writing and see that I have improved over time.
