Myth and Ritual: Journal Entry

The brainstorming section was a collective group work with a combination of all of our ideas imputed. Although I wasn’t here for the first class, my peers came up with the basic ideas of the characters and overall structure and I gave more ideas during the process of choreography/movement and character traits in the piece. The first step that we had to do was come up with the setting of our scene which was in the arctic. Then the three gods were built upon that idea especially the ice god. After that the story was easier to form with the conflict and ending. We quickly decided that we wanted three acts in this performance with the first one being the birth of the ice god, the fight, and rebirth of the earth god. I think I mostly took on a director role in this process so I usually take part in little pieces in every aspect. I think my main contribution is the choreography in the third act where Isabell and I created and blocked the scene. With the help of Ms.Hill we came up with the ideas for the entire song as well as using the chairs as props and Sadeem as the Earth god. I didn’t have much experience with lighting or costume but I could think of choreography and blocking for the stage. Once we had our sheet with our roles on it we quickly got onto our jobs. But overall, I think everyone helped in every aspect of the performance because although some people may be in charge for something, everyone’s opinion was heard and changes were made. For example, although I don’t understand the background of lighting, I can give some small tips on where the spotlight is and the colors to match with the themes. This story was about the birth of the evil ice god and her attempt to bully tribal members to take over the world. This plan was soon interfered by the fire god because they fought. The ice god lost the fight but fire god used up all his strength to defeat ice god which resulted in his death too. With the ashes of the two gods, new life was created by the rebirth of the earth god. The tribal members return back to life with the earth god and the earth god creates world peace. I think I put in as much effort as I could for this performance although I didn’t have much of a “personality-ic” role. This was a bit harder to play as we didn’t have any dialogue and only used movement to express emotion. I think the duet dance between Isabell and I turned out looking beautiful although some timing was off because of the organization of movement. I don’t think any of our “mistakes” that happened onstage affected the quality of our show because even though I watched this performance over and over again, on the day of the show it was still amusing to watch.

Physical Theatre: Masks

Today we explored how to treat a mask and did some improv performances with the mask on. We did one about sleeping, to explore our bodies, a short saying goodbye performance, and then a nature journey.

Chair Duet Reflection 1

In physical theatre class today we did a few chair diets with my classmates, I was paired up with Hannah, Eric then Isabell. With my duet with Hannah, we didn’t have much story, but we did seem like we were friends in the performance. Our movements were close together which showed that we had a close relationship. For the performance Eric and I choreographed, there was more physical contact, which meant that we had more body commitment. This duet was easy to choreograph since we could connect the moves together with each other so the choreography came together itself. It was a bit harder for Hannah at first because it was our first choreography but it got easier gradually with more practice. I noticed that it was hard for me to think of movements for these dances without music since music is usually my inspiration for dance.
