Identity: Brainstorm- Mindmap/ Vision

Mindmap/ Vision:

Since one of my favorite things to do in my spare time is to play piano and music, i could possibly take pictures surrounding the general outline of having an instrument in tact of photography.  I would like to make some type of portrait that involves the usage of a violin, or a viola, even a cello would be interesting to the eyes of people who have not really experienced music or have not been learning music for a long time. The hardship of learning an instrument is what i have experienced first hand, and the continuous learning experience that goes on day and night 24/7.

Final Triptych

In my final triptych, i have selected the pictures that have demonstrated the best of lines, and how the patterns is defined throughout the three pictures. It is interesting because it can also show the lighting of the buildings and the columns for the first picture, and the streaks of light for the second picture and the lines of parallel of the third picture. There is also a great streak of parallel, on all 3 pictures which show that it is not breaking the rule of thirds. However it does break the rule of main focus as it has no real focus on the entire 3 pictures, it is just a series of pictures that have a general pattern that looks well together. The tone of the pictures also are interesting as it can show it is taken in the dark, and it is interesting because it can demonstrate the colors more brighter and show depth in pictures like this.

Green and Red Selection

Green Selection:

In this picture, it is shown that there is a general pattern of the boards that cover the windows of ISB, and this is a very interesting pattern on the architecture that surrounds the building. The light is also kind of reflecting on the picture from the top right, which is interesting because the exposure and light of the photograph is not too high. The photograph shows different color schemes as well, and it is abstract because there is simply nothing to look at apart from the pattern. There is no main focus on this picture.

In this picture, I have captured a building that has an interesting pattern, and it looks like a piece of armor protecting the top part of the building, it strikes my interest as I have taken this picture. The picture is also interesting because of the repetitive walls of glass. The picture is taken in Shanghai, and some buildings are really bright contrasting the dark night. This picture is abstract because it does not fit the rule of thirds and the light is flying out everywhere, out of focus.

In this picture, it is showing a pattern on a shadow of the architecture in ISB. It shows a clear outline of the poles from picture one. It can demonstrate the usage of shadows on the general architecture. It is abstract because it is very unnatural and there is also an element of the sky, when there is mostly architecture.

In this picture, it shows the element of color and tone to make this picture abstract. The blue that is very evident on this building strike my attention as to becoming one of the more interesting colors as most other buildings are just simply stripes of colors. This is abstract because it does not show any interesting features apart from color and pattern, and it is also not in full shape. It means that the picture is slanted sideways and taken purposely because it would be abstract.

This picture demonstrates the rule of thirds, but only slightly. This is because the building on the top is being cut off because of the frame. In this picture, the main target is the Shanghai center building, however it gets enhanced by the IFC center and the two buildings, so the focus on the Shanghai center is enhanced. This is abstract because as the picture is in the rule of thirds, the general picture is slightly tilted, and the picture is taken when other things are distracting the main image like the lights. To add on, the picture also has the element of repetitiveness as the lights are continuous.

This picture is of the shanghai mingzhu tower. In this picture it shows that the color scheme is different from every “floor”. It does not give the slight continuous pace of light, because it is a single tower in the middle of the city.  It is abstract because the colors are so broad, and that the things under are blocking the general view of the bottom of the tower, and the tower loses focus after this.

This picture is simply a pattern that is repeating over and over again, on a building reflecting against the windows. This is interesting and abstract because the buildings are reflecting only on the bottom right of the photograph, and it seems very imperfect to be a picture. In addition, the lighting of only red for the logo of the reflecting building shows the contrast of the other black parts of the picture.

Red Selection:

In this picture, it is very interesting not only because of the glass windows that are reflecting the lights from other buildings and shows from below, but also interesting because the lights are giving off an aesthetic feeling and it demonstrates more interesting features than just a company in Shanghai. In addition, the picture shows the 3D element, as on the 2/3rd mark of the picture, it shows the line that separates the lighting and it is going in another direction.

In this picture, it shows almost hundreds of different columns that are all lining up on the building. It also has the element of 3d, and it seems like it is going up and up forever, as it is all parallel to the one below it. It is abstract because it has a good pattern feel to it, it does have the lighting that also seems smooth when transitioning to the next floor.

This is a picture of a building which is interesting because it is very squared and fully in shape. There is also one floor with something that looks like a cross. This shows the uniqueness of the photograph. It is abstract because it shows a pattern, and it is not fully shown in the picture of the entirety of the building and the pattern within.

Picture Selection- Yellow

The pictures above are selected as yellow.

  • The first four pictures were managed as similar, the mixture between buildings and nature is presented. The next 5 pictures are just singular branches/ pictures I believe that have the beauty of being random and spreading in different places. The final few pictures are random and without context. The pictures I selected  as yellow because they are the more weird/abstract pictures. There is a line between enough and too much abstraction, and i believe that these pictures demonstrate too much abstraction, or that they repeat and are similar from other pictures.

Analysis of a Picture by Jackie Ranken

Why did you choose this image in particular?

I chose this picture in particular because of the uniqueness of the picture.  The usual style of Jackie Ranken is different to this picture simply because there is a stripe of red in the middle, and he usually takes pictures in black and white.

•What do you find surprising or unusual about this photograph?

I find it unusual that there is any color besides black and white in this picture, especially on a random place like this venue.

•Look carefully and choose ONE of the Formal Elements that you think is important in the photograph (E.g. Focus, Light, Line, Repetition, Shape, Texture, Value/Tone).

I believe that the most important is how it is not really lined up, the picture is a bit slanted to the side, and it is kind of distracting. Apart from that, the obvious color/tone of the picture also shows the uniqueness of the picture.

•Describe why you think it is important (2 or 3 sentences)

I believe that it is important because he would want to portray something more in depth. It may be because it might be where he came from, or why he chose to become a photographer.

•In what ways are your chosen artist’s photographs abstract?

My chosen artists photographs abstract because it does not show the reality of pictures, instead edited. Additionally, Jackie Ranken provides the pictures in a bit sideways, which is very unusual.

•What do you like about the style? Be specific and explain your answer.

I like the colors chosen for the non black and white. The color shown is Red, which is a symbol of pride and peace in China. As said on the poster (Left side of the picture), it is in chinese.

•How will you adapt this style to your own photography? How does the image/artist inspire YOU?

I will adapt the uniqueness of this type of style in my own photography by attempting to put different types of elements into one picture. This will make it feel very different to usual pictures.

Pictorials Movement

  1. What is the Pictorialism Movement in photography?

The pictorialism movement in photography is a movement in where the stylistic and aestetic approach of photography dominated the entirety of the 20th century.

  1. What was the straight photography movement in photography? Why was it popular amongst photographers?

The straight photography movement in photography was a type of photography where it was not manipulated. Although it was mainly with a background with darker toned colors, but it depicts the main idea well.

  1. How has Aaron Siskind (above) been influenced by the Straight Photography Movement?

Aaron Siskind has  been influenced by the Straight photography movement because  he is the first person who ever combined the concepts of abstract photography and straight photography.

  1. What makes the work of Andreas Gursky and Uta Barth abstract. Are they both straight photographers? Why
The work of Andreas Gursky are mostly abstract because they take pictures at a large scale with no real clear pattern, instead it is usually a vague line that isn’t perfectly straight. Uta Barth likes to take pictures with a blurry scale, with clear abstraction.

Quarter 1 Reflection

What am I doing well?

I think that I am consistently handing in my homework on time, and that I have tried to annotate or reflect as deeply as I can. I think that this can reflect on my attitude on learning and as a student because handing in things on  time is a crutial part of the class, so that the teacher can grade and give feedback on my learning.

What do I still need to work on?

I think that i can work more on my reflection and writing skills, especially using more literary language that can really “pull” the reader in to read what I have written. I also have to work on my editing skills, like the occasional grammar mistakes that can make my essay or poem make no sense, which will cause the whole story to be a mess.

What steps can i take to continue to improve moving forward?

Thinking more before I write, and really consider the word choices is a great way to improve my ways of writing. Using and trying the different types of literary features can be helpful in the long run as well. I can also go and get more feedback from peers and the teacher, to get some more perspectives as to how I can improve, and what I have done well so far.
