A very large problem I faced in the makingof this product would be the time, we only have 2 weeks, (5 classes) of worktime, which is hard if you are trying to make a quite complicated circuit, especially that I am a beginner on circuits and soldering. Because of this I spent almost all time completing the circuits, leaving me not enough time to work on my basic structures and chassis of the car, the only thing I was able to make was a simple piece of cardboard with a box made of cardboard and holes made for the two switches and all of witch is connected to the card board with hot glue. I don’t feel very good about this because if I had more time and done the circuits more quickly I should have 3d printed the chasis and box which would be more precise on some parts like the holes for switches if done correctly, eventually because of the time issue I wasn’t able to make a car so I changed the contraption into a solar charged electric fan. But overall I feel good about what I made since I am a beginner on circuits.
My Plan is to make a solar panel car that could charge rechargeable batterys to power a car, this involves a lot of making electronics. During this project I learned how to connect wires and led’s, solar panels, crocodile clips, diodes, pret boards etc. currently i have succeded to make a device that can use solar panels (produces about 6.4 volts) to recharge 2 double A battery’s(about 2.6 volts) to power a motor. This easy contraption uses a led light working like a diode to keep the energy flowing one way (from solar panel into the batterys) instead of making the battery try to charge the solar panels(which shouldn’t be charged). It also consist of two switches, one controlling solar panel charging the pattery(so it wouldn’t over charge the battery and damage it), another controlling the battery powering the motor.
The problem with this contraption is that a pret board isn’t designed to be put into use, the wires connected to it could be easily tugged off. So I am swiching this contraption on to a circuit board and use soldering to connect the wires permanently onto the board so it won’t come off. Also I switched the led to an actual diode, which works better and doesn’t need to use more voltage and keep more to charge the battery. but I won’t have a way of directly knowing if the solar panels are charging the battery since a diode doesn’t light up.
For the frame of the car iwould just simply use cardboard as the base, and use cardboard to make a box surrounding the circuits, and put the solar banel above the car so it could turn the solar energy into electricity to charge the batterys.
On the last day I found out that I simply don’t have the time to make a 4 wheel car and don’t have a idea of how to connect the wheels, so I used plan B and made a basic box out of card board and use hot glue and tape to connect my circuits into It. See diagram below for details.
Day 1
work on the planning and find errors and solution for it, improve the plan, find the materials needed and make sure I have all of them, research on how to use circuits on the solar car.
Day 2
start workday, try to get the basic circuits done
Day 3
Full workday, try to get the basic circuits done
Day 4
Full work, get left over circuits done, then do the basic structures and frames of the car
Day 5
Full workday, finish the design, put the car together, run tests
1. What problems or needs can you identify that could be addressed with this kind of design?
Entertainment
energy capture & storage
education
safety
2. What else problems
Designing a product that would transfer energy and be educative and entertaining at the same time.
3. Marketing issues
Product would be mainly aimed at children’s boys under age 10 above 4 because I currently can’t make entertainment involving energy transfer that can entertain teenagers with the current materials we have in the lab, and I’m not sure what young girls like as entertainment except dolls for which I don’t have an idea of how to involve any form of energy transformation mechanisms in it
4. What energy transfer is?
Energy exists in many forms such as thermal energy, radiant energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, electrical energy, motion energy, sound energy, elastic energy, and gravitational energy. Energy transfer is when one form of energy transfers into another form of energy, for example transferring from potential energy into kinetic energy, etc.
5. Precedents
1. Rubber band boat
Rubber band boat is a good example of a toy that transfers energy because it transfers energy from potential energy (energy stored in the rubber band) into spinning the paddle which is basically kinetic energy, and the transfer is very simple it just uses rubber band to store energy and then release it into spinning the paddle causing the boat to move. I could use the way it stores energy in rubber bands on my own design because it is easy to do and effective and it is a very good way of showing potential energy.
2. Pull back toy car
How this car works is that when you pull the car back and release it the car would lurch forward. These toy cars use a pullback mechanism, basically when you pull the car back the wheels turning backwards would turn a gear train which contains five gears, the ending gear is connected to a twisted piece of metal called a torsion spring, the more you twist it the tighter it gets and the more energy is stored in it, and when you let go the spring quickly unwinds and goes back to its original state, turning the gear which sends kinetic energy back through the gear chain onto the wheels, sending the car forward. Something I like about this is that while it is a simple mechanism it transfers way more energy than the boat, transferring kinetic energy to mechanical energy to elastic energy and back into mechanical energy to kinetic energy. And I could use the gear chain and the torsion spring in my own design.
3. science
newtons cradle
is a sort of toy that demonstrates momentum and conservation of energy with spheres, when a sphere hits another sphere, the energy would be transferred through the sphere and into another, and finally acts on the last sphere on the other side, sending it up, and when it comes down it would send the energy back towards the first sphere. Good thing is that it had good education level without taking out the entertainment level.
4. hand-crank flashlight
when you cranked the lever on this kind of flashlight it would store the mechanical energy of the turning lever and converts it to electrical energy. And charge for later use. I Like how it uses the motor that can change your own energy working on cranking the lever which produces the mechanical energy and stores it as electrical energy. Could use the idea of cranking something to produce mechanical energy.
5. Solar panels
Solar panels convert the solar energy from sunlight into electrical energy, and could be used as a power source for a city, or cars, boat, etc. what could be useful is that as far as I know we have small solar panels in the supplies we have in our lab so I think I would be able to use the solar panels on my design if I could work out the circuits.
In Ken Liu’s short story “The Paper Menagerie” Jack’s reactions to the comments of other people emphasizes the effects of racism.
, first in the story when jack and his family had moved to a new neighborhood there were those two neighbors who came to greet to greet them, but after jack’s father left the house they started to be mean towards jack by calling him a little beast and also judging his father because he married a Chinese wife. after that another boy who was American came to his house but he crushed one of jacks paper toy the tiger which represented his mothers workmanship as a Chinese and her love towards jack, it also represented
Chinese cultural art. he also insulted jack’s mother and started to bully him in school, after this jack started to avoid his mother and will not speak with her unless she speaker in English, also he tried to avoid his identity as a half Chinese. this symbolized the impact of racism can give to a person because after this jack stopped loving his mother entirely even after she passed away.
The main character in Evan Hunter’s short story entitled “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” initially believes that his identity was as a royal and he was proud of it, but later understands that being a royal only brought him bad things he decided that he wants to be Andy instead of a royal. His changing understanding is revealed through the use of __emotion_______, __his use of language________, and __his thoughts_.
my product solves my problem(see my last post) because I made the measurement just enough to slide the card in easily but hard to fall out and leather causes more friction then my old pouch. and a skill I learned over this course is how to use the sowing machine because I had used it to connect two pieces of leather during the project. A important feature of my design is a pouch right outside the card pouch for money and other stuff and other than that I made a gap on one side so I can pull my card out.
the way the smell detector 3000 works is first it has a tube like a antenna on the top of the device it will get the smell inside and a proceeder will detect all the different smells in the air and show it on the bottom screen after you press the on button and press find, then you will select the food that you want, like pancakes and on the screen on top it will show a GPS showing your location the streets and the location of the source of smell(the food store) then bellow this it will show the name of the food, its location(25th street) and how much it costs(30 RMB) and on the left of that there will be a compass that will show the direction of the food with your device as the center, and also when you get closer to the food store a bit in radio will start to beep more rapidly(this only starts after you get in a ten meter radius of the store because I figured the GPS won’t show to much when you are very close). after your done you press the reset button for a second use. I got the sound idea from the metal detector
and I got the whole things idea from ghost busters ghost detector
