“Tear of Sexism”                                      “Despair”                                                    “How to live a life”

Intent: Same with the vision of set 1. I want to mainly express the depression and despair emotion that people can feel from sexism. Therefore, I want the audience to realize the emotion of the people who are getting discriminated against and unrespected by sexism and try to solve the problem. I will be mainly inspired by the photographer named Ralph Eugene Meatyard who is a great photographer who can effectively utilize the blur and close-up to express very sad and despairing feelings.

The first photo is called “Tear of Sexism” because the subject of this photo is a girl that crying,  and she is crying because of the discrimination caused by sexism. The second photo is called ” Despair” because, from the pose of the subject, we can be the despairing emotion of the people getting discriminated against by sexism. The last photo is called “How to live a life”. This is because the two women in the photo are bowing their heads, which is because they are getting discriminated against by sexism.

To show this intent through photographs, I tried many different elements. One of the ways is using blur and close-up techniques because my inspired photographer used blur and close-up to show negative emotions and it worked really well, so I also made blur and close-up. Also, to develop the idea of my intent, I used a dark tone, which has the potential meaning of negative emotion. Similarly, I also used negative-looking poses to make the audience easily identify the purpose of the photographs. Lastly, after I took those three photographs, I realized that “How to live a life” is relatively brighter than the other two photos, so I used Affinity Photo to make the photo a little bit darker so that the combination of those three photographs looks good, and maximize the intent.

Presentation

I want to make the diagram like this because of several reasons. First, I placed “Tear of Sexism” in the middle because after the set for this project, I thought this photo is the most successful photo that reached my vision because of its great pose, tone, and technique. Also, each end of the photo is not white because my photographs should not have much bright color which reveals positive emotion because I want to have a dark tone so that the photographs reveal negative emotions. However, I still left some white parts between photos because since those photos have a similar tone, if those photographs were connected, it will be difficult for the audience to recognize each photo. Also, I made the left photo a little bit darker because it was relatively bright, and to make the combination of those three photos look better. In the process of making this diagram, Ralph Eugene Meatyard helped me a lot because he gave me some support to take those photos.

Critique

Most of the elements in the photographs support the purpose of the issue that I want to talk about, which is sexism, and also show the emotion in the photo. For example, the tone of the photo is very dark, which can trigger negative emotion about sexism. Also, the pose of the subjects looks really sad and depressed, making the audience realize the emotion of being discriminated against. However, in one of the photos, the subject is wearing white clothes which do not fit the purpose of the photo. When we see those pictures, our eyes go to the subject and the dark tone of the photo, which is what I wanted because those two things significantly make the audience feel the negative emotion about sexism. However, there is still some distraction in these photos. One example is that some of the photos are too dark to identify the subject, making really hard to find the purpose. Thus, the elements, such as tone, pose, and techniques support the audience to realize the purpose of the photos, which is the emotion that is caused by sexism. Lastly, since the elements are used so effectively the audience can easily and quickly identify the purpose of the photos, which will eventually make the audience to stop sexism.
