The Animal World’s Battles

Did you know that it was common for snakes to get in people’s houses in India? Even these bloodthirsty beasts has a deadly enemy: the famous snake-killer mongoose. In the story “Rikki Tikki Tavi”, the mongoose Rikki is found by an English family who just moved into a bungalow in Segowlee and becomes their pet. He meets lots of new animals in their garden, and tries to get revenge on the two evil snakes. After a long battle, Rikki succeeds in killing both of them, becoming a hero. The main theme is that bravery can build trust and faith between people.

In the story “Rikki Tikki Tavi”, by Rudyard Kipling, the author believes that bravery often creates strong bonds of faith and trust. When Rikki killed the deadly little snakeling Karait, his human family was shocked and grateful for his bravery: “Teddy’s mother picked him up from the dust and hugged him, crying that he had saved Teddy from death, and Teddy’s father said that he was providence”(Kipling, 5). This shows that from Rikki’s act of fearlessness towards an evil snake, he was rewarded with trust from his owners. They were thankful for his protection. Furthermore, throughout the story Rikki acted bravely every time there was something wrong. without thought in front of his enemies, and got rid of wrong from happening again. It was part of his instinct as a mongoose to kill snakes, but it’s more of helping his friends, and keeping all of them safe. Bravery can bring justice to the world, but also a reward of strong relationships. As the story continues, Rikki’s loyalty and power earns him a rightful place as a fearless warrior who guards the garden and its people from any snakes. Rikki uses his own bravery to make sure his friends and family are safe “with tooth and jump and spring and bite, till never a cobra dared show its head inside the walls” (Kipling, 9). The young mongoose showed the cobras with his selfless bravery that his garden wasn’t a place to go, in order to keep his animal friends and owners safe. Rikki showed that he would sacrifice his life for saving his friends, which helped strengthen relationships. At the end of the story, Rikki became Teddy’s faithful guardian who went everywhere with him, and the family believes in the mongoose to keep them safe. Through this we can see the power of bravery for helping others brought peace and appreciation from the people around him.

Overall, in this short story Rikki’s bravery brought many strong bonds between him and his friends and family.

I can relate to this story because I care a lot about animals and nature. Nature is all around us, and and sometimes we don’t realize its importance for the world to keep moving on, and that it has many of its own battle. I think through this short story the author is trying to tell us that bravery can stop injustice and evil in the world, and will create faith and trust from others. I think Kipling might also be criticizing the many wars waged by us humans. Through replacing us with animals, “Rikki Tikki Taki” tells us the savage, brutal, painfully true battles that have happened between animals, but also humans.

A Mind’s Conflict Starting from a Purse

My Found Poem shows an internal conflict in the short story Thank You M’am by Langston Hughes. I know this because when the protagonist Roger was forced to go to Mrs. Jones’s house, he tried to decide whether to “make a dash for it down the hall” (Hughes, 3), or be a good person and stay put. In my Found Poem, this is shown in the first few words: “The boy turned around, wondering. He could run.” Then, Roger realizes that the woman trusts him. She “did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run now, nor did she watch her purse” (Hughes, 3) I think that Mrs. Jones was trying to tell Roger that she wouldn’t get him in trouble for trying to steal her purse, which I also included in my poem to give the reader a look at the antagonist. Roger feels overwhelmed by the antagonist’s faith in him. He feels that he should repay Mrs. Jones in some way. This character develops throughout this internal conflict, going from being a boy who wasn’t taught right from wrong, to being thankful and feeling ashamed of his actions. My artwork supports my poem, because it clearly shows the two choices that Roger was torn about. In addition, I wrote the title really big, because I think it shows how the protagonist wants to do more than just thank Mrs. Jones, who taught a valuable lesson to him.

1 large cup of buckwheat flour

1 teaspoon of yeast

1 teaspoon of sugar

4 large cups of water

Oil

Steps:

  1. Pour 1 teaspoon of yeast and sugar in a pot

  6. Stir, and at the same time add three spoons of water
  7. Put on the lid and let it ferment for 2 hours
  8. Fry into pancakes on a skillet

Here was my design challenge:

To achieve the design challenge I had to make my pancakes gluten-free. I replaced flour with rice flour in the recipe. Pancakes are easy to rebake/heat so I didn’t need to make any special changes for that.

Similarities and Differences between my original and gluten-free pancakes:

Similarities:

  1. Both batters fermented for 2 hours
  2. They both turned gold and brown when fried
  3. Looked visually the same

Smelled grainy because they both contained grains

Differences:

    1. Flour was replaced with rice flour for the gluten-free pancakes
    2. Gluten-free pancakes weren’t as fluffy as the original because I used rice flour with is harder and less dense as wheat flour.
    3. Gluten-free pancakes feel and taste coarser since it’s harder for the air to get through when fried because I used rice flour.

I would add butter and/or milk to improve my adapted recipe, because it would make it fluffier and more tasty to eat, and not as coarse.

2 large cups of rice flour

1 large cup of corn flour

1 large cup of millet flour

1 large cup of buckwheat flour

1 teaspoon of yeast

1 teaspoon of sugar

4 large cups of water

Oil

To make my recipe gluten free I had to research most of my ingredients to make sure they don’t contain gluten. The only ingredient in my recipe that contained gluten was flour, which I replaced with rice flour that has similar nutrients and is

gluten free.

Legacies from ancient Rome and China

Our Chinese New Year Door Decoration

Skills that I learned or developed were measuring with detail, how to do flat design and rich design, and how to incorporate a specific topic into a design. The impact of this product will be that Ms. Patty’s door will be more attracting, and it’ll be a good decoration for the Chinese New Year.  Overall, I think this product was successful because our group made a design with a balanced amount of things in it so it isn’t overflowing with design. It fit on the door, which meant we did the measurements right. The teacher chose the design she liked most, and likes it on her door which is a success too. We worked together very well, and had lots of fun putting it up. One piece of advice I would give a future student doing this project is measure precisely, or else your paper might not fit on the door; have as many ideas for designs so you won’t know what to do for your sketches of door decoration ideas; and cooperate with your teammates which will help you end up with a good grade. The wreath that I found online included red packets, ancient coins, and cherry blossoms. Even though we didn’t use it, I think it was a really cool design. I really enjoyed this project

Edited Argumentative Essay on banning single-used plastic

Banning single-used plastic is an effective way to save our oceans because it has been harming marine animals, polluting the water, and wasting energy. Even though it may be useful for our daily lives, every piece of it will remain on earth for decades.

Marine animals can be protected if single-used plastic is banned. Animals such as seabirds, turtles, and fish are threatened by the plastic waste. “According to the United Nations, at least 800 species worldwide are affected by marine debris and as much as 80 percent of that litter is plastic.” (Simon Reddy, 2018) Animals might have mistaken it for food, become trapped, and been affected by it in a range of ways. Research shows that there has been a less than expected amount of plastic on the ocean surface. “That likely to be because the food chain is soaking up the smaller particles of plastic known as microplastics.” (Christopher Doyle, 2014) Every year, there’s approximately 13million metric tons of plastic thrown into the ocean.  “Roughly half of the annual plastic production is destined for a single-used product.” (Plastic Oceans International, 2016) Reducing the amount of single-plastic, which we use the most will help bring down this number largely.

Banning single-used plastic is an effective way to save our oceans because it’s been polluting ocean water. For example, in a newsela article a place in Guatemala was on the edge of losing their natural environment, mainly their tourist spot Lake Pedro. “Before 2016, San Pedro La Laguna was drowning in plastic pollution.” (Lola Mendez, Atlas Obscura, 2019) But after they banned all single-used plastic and sued biodegradable products the government gave them, the lake slowly returned to normal. In addition, they used plastic as fuel and decorations. “Several projects have launched to transform trash into decorations. This encourages the mentality of reducing, recycling, reusing and regenerating.” (Lola Mendez, Atlas Obscura, 2019) Plastic is ruining the natural beauty of the ocean, turning it into a sea of unbiodegradable products that was thrown in without being recycled every year “on top of the 150million metric tons that already circulate our marine environment.” (Ocean Conservancy, 2019) Furthermore, the ocean is where most of the oxygen on earth comes from. However, not all citizens agree to the solution of banning single-used plastic.

Even though a lot of countries have already banned single-used plastic, not all the people like this action. Others argue that it’s necessary for our daily lives, and can be used in many different ways. “For example, single-used plastic products that prevent the spread of infection are crucial in the medical industry.” (Plastics Industry Association, 2019) But there are other things that can replace plastic. Paper bags and leather bags are reasonable substitutes because they can both break down naturally. Biomimicry can also help solve this problem. Recycling plastic can go to a lot of trouble and a waste of time and energy. Opponents may say that a lot of people can’t afford biodegradable products. Alternatively, people can use leather bags over an over again, and lowering the price or providing citizens with supplies are solutions. Plastic may be easy one-time use, but the harm it’s done to the ocean is deadly. Therefore, single-used plastic should be banned for its impact on the ocean.

Marine animals and the ocean have been widely affected negatively by single-used plastics. The environment has been dying because the amount of thrown-away plastic. Plastic can be replaced by lots of products, and has wasted a lot of energy from recycling it. Banning single-used plastic is an effective way to save our oceans.

My Phone Holder

Skills that I learned and developed were how to use Adobe Illustrator and Maker Case. In Adobe Illustrator I learned how to make shape designs and other cool techniques. The impact of this product will be that I will have more space to put stuff in my locker, and I can just get my phone when I need it and other things that I put in my phone case because it’s very big. Overall, I think this project was successful because I made a satisfactory phone case that I like and is my own design. I think it’s really fun and cool to watch the laser cut our pieces out. At first, I wanted to have two boxes, but then when they were cut out I realized the measurements were wrong so I decided to use one of the boxes-the one with the design on it. That’s why my sketches don’t have my box’s drawing. Something I should work on is being more detailed in my annotations and checking before I decide to cut out my design. Even so, I like how it turned out.  Now I have experience so next time I will remember my mistake and do better. Advice I’d give to a future student doing this project is  check before you cut your  design out so  it  won’t turn  out wrong  like  mine.
