School Uniforms
Many people I know don’t like uniforms, so we believe that schools should stop making students wear uniforms. Especially in public schools. In case you like uniforms you should definitely still read this because it might change your mind. Well here’s a little fact my mom hated DCB for making students wear uniforms. She mainly hated it because it added up to her housework. Obviously, I HATED it too! So, schools shouldn’t make students wear uniforms because they are too expensive, may be sexist, and limit of self-expression.
Parents already pay for the school but if you have to wear uniforms you must pay even more! Many people think that the money you paid for the school includes the payment for uniforms, which means that you don’t need to pay again for uniforms. According to the website Smart Asset, parents say that normal clothes are better because they are way cheaper. The pricier items are blazers, and dress shoes, which some families struggle to afford. The reason why uniforms are expensive s because uniforms are only available in limited numbers of suppliers and lack of competition. Because of this, it keeps the prices high.
Many students get bullied for wearing uniforms, for not looking good int hem, or strict rules, while some uniforms may strike students and parents as sexist. Students like transgender get bullied the most for wearing uniforms. Some schools in the US have rules like if you were born boy you must wear suits. Young Post (website) said that some Hong Kong schools tell girls to kneel on the floor to make sure that their dressed are less than two inches above the ground. If it’s shorter than the mandatory length you have to either re-hem your skirt or buys a new uniform. If you must buy a new uniform, it’ll cost even more. Going back to Smart Asset, they said that girls must wear traditionally “feminine” garments. When I was in DCB, girls must wear skirts to school. Even if it was cold and I knew for a fact some girls didn’t like to wear skirts like me. It made me really uncomfortable and it gave me lots of pressure. Worrying if other students are staring at me.
Some people may say that wearing whatever you want gives you more anxiety, but just because you are wearing whatever you want at the weekends doesn’t mean you are expressing yourself. Imagine walking around at school and people tell you that you look very cute/nice/that they love your fashion sense! When I was at DCB we were told not to dye our air or pierce our ears. Once I moved to ISB I was able to do all of those. Many teenagers believe that doing all of those will add more to your style. Many researchers say that teenagers, in particular, are famous for needing to express their emotions and their taste in music, fashion, and art through clothing, hair, and piercings. To the daily view that I see and on YouTube teenagers like follow new fashion trends.
Overall making students. Wear uniforms aren’t good for students at all because it’s too expensive, could be sexist, and not enough self-expression. Be nice to your LOVING students who are suffering! Finally, schools like DCB and BSB should stop making students wear uniforms. You’re making your loving students suffer. Just be like ISB or WAB.
