Paper Thesis

In Ken Liu’s short story “Paper Menagerie”, Jack’s understanding of his identity changes from embracing his Chinese culture, to abandoning his traditions to adopt western ideals. The author demonstrates this change through the use of symbolism, characterization, and conflict.

Persona Poster

White Outline

PDF Version of Persona Poster

Ryan Quon

Design, to me, is the production or enhancement of a product that improves aspects of daily life.  My goals in design are to improve my skills in building and designing objects/products, and familiarizing myself with new tools. I have interests in architectural, interior, and product design.  My skills in design include using Fusion 360 and Adobe Illustrator.

I used a style that I wanted to resemble Elena Rossato’s style, which displays vibrant, and occasionally, psychedelic colours. Her work generally uses two primary colours: Blue and red, which I wanted to replicate.

The design started with a white outline, that traced all differences in light and visible bones. They also placed borders on the face, which I would use to plan out the process. On the first day, I completed the outline and tested some brushes.  I experimented with colour palettes and different pens and brushes and came to the conclusion of using green, blue, and yellow as this poster’s primary skin and background colours. The hair would remain black. The second day, I completed the eye, cheek, and part of the upper lip. On the final day, I finished the nose, ears, chin and mouth. I used the pen “Studio Pen” for the whole process because I thought its sleek and flowing-like lines were what was best for the person poster.

I think this style reflects me because I love oil paintings. I also find music, stories, and art with deeper meanings another thing that I enjoy, something with open interpretation, and I think this style of art  Initially, I wanted to use skin colours for my persona poster, although I thought that would remove the aesthetic I wanted to achieve. As a result, I chose blue, which according to plan, would later be complemented with yellow and green.

I think the success of my persona poster was substandard. I didn’t complete the persona poster on time, and half of the face wasn’t finalized. If I were to redo the project, I would spend less time planning and more time working. I probably should’ve chose a less detail-demanding style to draw with. I left most of the face incomplete, and some areas that needed minor adjusting. (The nose for example) If I used a larger pen size and less variety in colour, the process would have been much faster. However, if it were concluded, the poster would certainly represent me as an individual.

3rd Day

Leather Design Challenge

Leather Design Challenge

During the summer, my gum experienced a few problems. Because the gum sat under the sun for so long, the texture became soft and too tenuous. Some even melted or split apart. In addition, the case got ripped and malformed the gum pieces. My product provides a good solution, by insulating the gum packet, and protecting it from heat. It also protects it from getting ripped by keys or cards. During this assignment, I had learned how to sow using a sewing machine, something I previously had no experience in, although it turned out much harder than I had anticipated. If I could start from the beginning again, I would add the buttons and pins first, before I sew. I also should have understood how the buttons ad pins worked before trying them completely blind. I think the sowing was the part I struggled with most because the amount of pressure placed on the foot press must be stable at all times. I also found it challenging, because I couldn’t keep up with the pace of the machine at some points, which resulted in large mounds of string. However, that didn’t stop it from being a decent product. The entire holder is a single piece, not including the strap. That minimized scraps, glue, or additional sowing. Lastly, I’m proud of this product, because this was the first time I had tried using a sewing machine on leather, and what came out was not a total failure. And considering the design limitations, I’d say this product is pretty good!

Tentacool

This is a backpack pin that depicts a swimming Tentacool (Pokemon). It’s composed of felt and lead sowable wire, along with a battery holder and a red LED. I chose this because I used to play some Pokemon Ruby edition, which features the Tentacool, a squid octopus thing. I like the design of the Tentacool, because of its colourful and likeable appearance. The discarded the other designed because my first one, the Mickey Mouse, was too complex and had too many individual pieces. The second, the Lamp was too simple. The Tentacool came 3rd, and I liked it most because the design was just right, and the appearance was nice.

I had never sowed much before, only doing it occasionally to fix a pair of pants. Learning the techniques were hard, especially tying on and off. However, with enough practice, most skills can be done okay. I want to learn how to code into the LED and add more components.

For the Lord

The goals of the Christian missionaries were to convert foreign people and spread national customs. however, they led to the deprecation of native customs, and the Boxer Rebellion.

The missionaries of America arrived in China to deliver the kind word of god. This is shown in SQ 2, part B, paragraph 2, sentence 3, it states: “We live and die for the Lord and China. The way to the coast is not open. We have not heard anything from Peking for nearly two months, but the way to the Lord is open, thanks be to Him. Let not your hands fail and do not lose courage. What we sow shall bear fruit in its time.” This shows that the people of C&MA and C.I.M societies are truly devoted to the lord and are willing to create religious settlements in China. These missionaries are willing to live and die for the lord if that’s what is required to convert the people of China to Christianity. When American missionaries approached China, they were still accustomed to American customs and lifestyle. They have not adapted to their native environment or culture, so many of the products they used are still American. In SQ 2, part A, sentence 4, it states: “They essentially exemplified the American lifestyle. They used American products; they were people who believed that American products were the best products.” This shows that the missionaries that used these products were clearly not only devoted to their religion, but to their culture. Some sentimental items were probably carried during those journeys, and the culture of their nation followed in the trail. When missionaries arrived in the province of China, the missionaries opened them for religious and diplomatic reasons. Foreign traders then pursued those provinces, and making business, selling foreign products. This resulted in natives adopting the customs as well, being proselytized to Christianity, and abandoned their old traditions. On page 1 of SQ 2.5, paragraph 3, it states: “Traditionally, entire communities would come together during times of drought and pray to the gods and ancestors for rain. Those villagers who had converted to Christianity, however, refused to participate in the rituals.” This shows that the old traditions that villagers were accustomed to were deserted by those that converted to Christianity. Because they were proselytized, they believe in a new god, so naturally, they would renounce their previous faith. But also, in times of desperation, people will join another religion for personal survival and benefit. During the moment these missionaries emerged in China, droughts, and floods were occurring in Shandong, where the Boxer Rebellion first appeared. The Boxers believed they could be possessed by divine spirits, that supported the eradication of Foreign Influence in China. They performed Martial Arts, detested Christianity, and retaliated with blood towards foreigners and Christians after a 2-year drought that occurred. Because they practiced Buddhism and Confucian beliefs, they saw Christians as threats to their culture. In the letter of Rongzhang, he says: “All the chaos in Beijing is because of the horrible crime that the foreign soldiers did. They burned many Catholic churches and buildings built by the foreigners, and there are also countless Christian/Catholic devotees dying in the rebellion.” Although many Christians are being killed, Chinese individuals were spared because of their lacked contact with foreign influence. As stated in Rongzhang’s letter: “The towns and counties nearby are all safe. The business is going on as usual. You don’t need to worry about my safety. Me and everybody else (his relatives) are all well. We will go back to visit you after autumn.” This demonstrates that the Boxers are kind to the Chinese, although aggressive towards foreigners. This shows that they are killing foreigners for the purpose of shattering the foreign religions that are plaguing the Chinese lands and infuriating the Gods. They did this because, as stated before, the foreign religions were replacing the ones already present in China, so Boxers saw them as a threat to Chinese culture.

Circuits and Me 1

Course Reflection

Describe your favorite circuit experience in the class to date and explain why it’s the best

I enjoyed making and decorating my paper circuit because it was challenging to maintain so many wires,  to four LEDs.

Describe a challenge that you’ve overcome already in this class:

To make a complicated wire system in a parallel circuit

a. what made it a challenge

Hard to maintain so many wires

b. what you tried that didn’t work

Smoothing out the wires

c. how you finally overcame it

Trying to press down the wires around the LEDs to get more contact.

Describe a difficulty you are currently having that you have not yet overcome.

Getting more contact with LEDs

a. what about it is challenging

I already built the circuit system, and to fix it, I would have to scrap the whole project. I should have smoothed out the wires in the beginning, and placed the LEDs on the wires, and not beneath them.

b. what have you tried so far

Pressing down the wires and smoothing out the circuit

c. what are your next steps to continue trying to overcome it

Restart the circuit, and place LEDs above the wires

Explain one aspect of the class you really like and why you like it (This means Miss Kim shouldn’t change it).

The Tinkercad experience was pretty good

Explain one aspect of the class you really dislike, why you dislike it, and how Miss Kim could change it to make it better.

Could be more complicated, and use a bigger variety of materials

Project Reflection

Describe your project: the theme, the circuit, what the LEDs represent

My E-card was made for cousins during Christmas. It is a parallel circuit, and the LEDs represent ornaments on the tree.

Include a picture or two (or three but no more) of your project here

Explain one aspect that you are happy with and why

How I challenged myself to make something bigger

Explain one aspect you would do differently, how and why

Take my time to smooth out the wires

HUMANITIES SINO – ROMAN SWAY

Go to this Sway

The 2638

My biggest success in this project was that my door functions and looks amazing, dotted with stars and constellations, and the fact that it fits like a glove. However, during the placement, it ripped in the process. One concern that was shared with me was that the constellations were not obvious enough, in addition to the multiple rips across the door. Although the photos cannot capture the constellations, the door itself is very close to what our intentions were, and how we saw the full product. Overall, I think the product was successful because the door looks amazing, and the owner enjoys it, and the door fits and serves its purpose. 2825_0012826_001

CODING APPS

When I started this unit, I was completely unfamiliar with building apps in general. Now I can understand how lists function and I have basic knowledge on how blocks work. I used to think lists and clocks are complex and seemingly impossible. Now it seems like a simple task.

Christian has just begun the Spider-Man Comics because he was sick of the movies. I know that I have already completed the series.  He says that he should monitor his progress while reading the series because he wants to complete it and the other series as well. I then designed this app that keeps track of which books he reads and a deadline clock. Christian also has the problem to forget about which marvel comics go in which order, because there is such a huge abundance of them, and he wants to enjoy all of them in order, not missing a scene or detail. But, he just can’t manage to do so. He also cannot keep track of the books he covered and overreads. He needs a much more organized approach.

This is the design choice I went with because it was a simple but effective design that resembles a checkbook or checklist with a much more modern take. This design is also fitting because of all the selections that the user can choose from. However, it has a design flaw which is that the checkbook button is at the very bottom of the list. I also accidentally used the wrong button element, so the list did not function until I found out.

The quality of the app would fit Christians requirements, but I feel like it could be improved. The list functions, the app and timer work, but I did not add the rewind mode and Users Guide.  So I would rank my app as a 3/5.

My app is good because of the information and uses it conveys. it includes a library location, author, book summary, a timer, and a list. The weakness if the inconvenience of it, the limited use of it, and it only mentions the first 10 books.
