The main character in Evan Hunter’s short story entitled “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” initially believes himself is a Royal, and he does not think he is dying. However, he later understands his true identity–Andy. He also found out he was going to die. His changing understanding is revealed through the use of symbolism, point of view, and interactions with other people.
- “Had they known that he was Andy or had they simply known that he was Royal wearing a purple silk jacket?”
- “Rain is sweet, I’m Andy.”
- “I’m Andy, he screamed wordlessly, I’m Andy.”
