In the book Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief, we know that Percy has a bad attitude towards school and can’t manage his emotions well. What good choices can he make for himself and the community? Are there any ways for him to control his temper? Or his attitude?
Firstly, Percy has a bad attitude towards school and is not confident about himself influenced by ADHD. In Percy Jackson page 2, Percy says Mr. Brunner “has his awesome collection of Roman armor and weapons so he was the only teacher whose class didn’t put me to sleep,” also “he told stories and lets us play games in class.” Research suggests that children who has ADHD “might be very focused when something interests them.”(ADHD article, pg.22) We can see that Percy likes to play games and move his body and was interested in Roman history because ADHD children “like to be outdoors and move their bodies. “(ADHD article, pg.23) Also, Percy is not confident in himself. “What’s so great about me? A dyslexic, hyperactive boy with a D+ report card, kicked out of school for the sixth time in six years.” (Riorden, pg.38) Percy shouldn’t think negatively because “there is no app that can do the things a unique, creative mind can do. “(ADHD article, pg.23) Therefore, I suggest that teachers of Percy should assign more outdoor activities for Percy to help him build his confidence. Another point is that ADHD students might be easily distracted. In page 5 of Percy Jackson, he was listening to Mr. Brunner talking about his favorite title—Greek. Meanwhile, Nancy Bobofit was chatting something else behind him, he got very distracted and shouted at Nancy. Research shows that some work might require the ability– diffused attention, such as reporters and business leaders. So there is no need to be self-abased.
Secondly, Percy can’t control his emotions. He often bursts out things. Managing emotions might be a little difficult for Percy, but he could try. In the book page 17, Percy said “Finally, when our English teacher, Mr. Nicoll, asked me for the millionth time why I was too lazy to study for spelling tests, I snapped. I called him an old sot. I wasn’t even sure what it meant, but it sounded good.” at this time, his emotion had lost connection with logical thinking, making him burst out bad words. He should think about what will others feel about his reaction. “Think about how you feel as a result of each possible reaction. ”(managing emotion article, pg19) Bursting out words might make Percy feel sorry and miserable too. “Because you don’t want me around?” I regretted the words as soon as they were out. (Riorden, pg.39) After he said this sentence, he felt sorry for his mom because he doesn’t want to destroy the positive relationship between he and his mom. When we were about to react, “stop before you decide, to give yourself a chance to think.”(managing emotion article, pg19)These are some examples for Percy to cool down and make good choices.
Overall, Percy can use some strategies to manage his emotions. This leads him to positive relationship with others. Teachers can also improve Percy’s learning by doing more activities and giving him extra help on his homework. This helps Percy to make good choices for himself and the community.
