This found poem was based on “The Fan Club” by Rona Maynard. Laura is having trouble choosing between her friend Rachel and the “in” group. At first, Laura thought the “in” group was whispering about her in the hallway. She was also trying to defend Rachel against the people that were making fun of her when she “jabbed her notebook with her pencil”. At the end, Laura realized they were only talking about Rachel and not her the whole time which then led her to choosing the “in” group over Rachel even when she described them as “cold” and “unkind” in the beginning. However, Laura hesitated and “her hands trembled as she picked up the card and pinned it to her sweater”. This shows that there was internal conflict between the character and herself. I tried to use words such as “cruel” and “malicious” to show how the “in” group was treating Rachel. I purposefully did not include the part where Laura heard the “in” group whispering about Rachel in the hallway to make the reader wonder more about what happened and why Laura hated them so much. The sharp shells symbolize the harsh words the “in” group had said to Rachel.
