How Losing Jobs Turned into an Economic Crisis

The on-going pandemic has made life difficult for many people. One problem for many workers was that many were losing their jobs, working hours, and income. People during lockdowns were avoiding public areas, which resulted in the loss of business for many small companies. Not only has Covid-19 impacted companies and industries, it is also making the Chinese economy decline. In this essay, I have explored how Covid-19 has affected the Chinese economy, the public, our future, and what will the Chinese government do in order to reduce job loss and job disruption.

A Typical Farmer in a Frantic Revolution

He might just collect harvest and live by a farm in Paris, he might not have enough money to pay for his daily needs, he might suffer from unfair treatment. Raphaël might seem to be ordinary, but he lived in the times of the French Revolution and had fought for liberty, equality, and fraternity. Raphaël watched with his own two eyes as France got rid of monarchy and rose to power as a republic. He watched in delight, jealousy, and fear. This is his story.

The French Revolution marked the end to the system of absolutism and the Ancient Regime. It abolished French monarchy and formed a French Republic. Although the French Revolution was extremely violent and has taken the lives of many innocent people, it is worth it since it introduced the new French Republic and the idea of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Before the revolution, France was nearly bankrupt and many people were upset about the unequal taxation. People were suffering from starvation and poverty everyday while the wealthy didn’t even care. After the revolution, people had more freedom and were allowed to do anything as long as no one was harmed. People also had a better lifestyle, and there was more equality in terms of taxation, which is why the revolution played a very significant role in changing France.

The French Revolution – A Period of Time Where People Got Their Heads Chopped Off

Over the course of 10 years, France has changed not only from a king to a military genius, it abolished monarchy and ended the Ancien Regime. However, was this change worth all of the bloodshed? France became so obsessed with violence that over 25,000 people were killed, including many that were innocent. When Napoleon became the “First Consul”, France had more peace, equality, and liberty, but some of the laws Napoleon changed were similar to when King Louis XVI ruled. Therefore, we concluded that violence is not always the solution to one’s political goals.

In this video we have included 5 major events of The French Revolution: Tennis Court Oath, Storming of the Bastille, Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, Reign of Terror, and the Rise of Napoleon. Hope you enjoy!

Literary Non-Fiction: Google It

Google It: A History of Google by Anna Crowley Redding is about how Google went from being a homework assignment to one of the most controversial search engines in the world. The story is told from the perspective of the founders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two Stanford students who wanted to organize the world’s information. Sharing their love for mathematics and technology, the two managed to achieve their wild ideas despite the amount of problems they faced.

I found this book to be really interesting and I hope you will notice the central ideas and themes that I discovered as you read my notebook pages.

The first idea that I discovered is that: Anything is possible if you attempt it. See my ideas here:

Since Larry and Sergey dropped out of Stanford to run Google as a business, they were even more determined to change the world. However, the company wasn’t making any money when it launched and even after it gained popularity, which made me wonder how Google became so successful at the end. I sometimes wondered if they had made the wrong decision, but despite the many challenges that they had faced, I realized that you shouldn’t be afraid of failure, even when testing out crazy ideas.

On page 125, Gmail’s privacy issues caused a lot of issues for the company, but they did not let failure hold them back. Google believed that if people didn’t give up on their dreams, all of their effort would soon pay off. This page shows the causes and effects on how they managed to solve the problems and finally earn money.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe Book Talk

In this video, I summarized and shared with you the theme of “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe”. I have also showed how the main character Ari develops throughout the story with examples and how his friend Dante managed to help him understand. I recommend this book especially to people who suffer from self-doubt and depression since the main character is going through the same thing.

My Speech is about Shells found poem

This found poem was based on “The Fan Club” by Rona Maynard. Laura is having trouble choosing between her friend Rachel and the “in” group. At first, Laura thought the “in” group was whispering about her in the hallway. She was also trying to defend Rachel against the people that were making fun of her when she “jabbed her notebook with her pencil”. At the end, Laura realized they were only talking about Rachel and not her the whole time which then led her to choosing the “in” group over Rachel even when she described them as “cold” and “unkind” in the beginning. However, Laura hesitated and “her hands trembled as she picked up the card and pinned it to her sweater”. This shows that there was internal conflict between the character and herself. I tried to use words such as “cruel” and “malicious” to show how the “in” group was treating Rachel. I purposefully did not include the part where Laura heard the “in” group whispering about Rachel in the hallway to make the reader wonder more about what happened and why Laura hated them so much. The sharp shells symbolize the harsh words the “in” group had said to Rachel.

Reflection on Argumentative essay

After reading my essay, I found out that I did well on using a lot of words and phrases to transition, link and create cohesion. Another thing I did well was that I made my thesis clear in every paragraph including the introduction and conclusion.

However, one thing I could work on is to add more reasoning to show that my evidence is relevant. Another thing I did not do well is that sometimes I did not make my evidence relevant and mixed up “marine debris” and specifically “single-use plastics”.

Schoolwork and friendship are an important part of everyone’s life and well-being.

Schoolwork and friendship are an important part of everyone’s life and well-beingStrong relationships can affect your health while children with ADHD can still concentrate on some subjects! In chapter 1-3 of “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief”, Percy Jackson struggles in school because he has ADHD plus dyslexia, and only one friend

Positive relationships are an important part of everyone’s well-being. On the way to the museum, “I put up with Nancy Bobofit, the freckly red-headed kleptomaniac girl, hitting my best friend, Grover, in the back of the head with chunks of peanut butter-and-ketchup sandwich.” (page 3) When Grover gets bullied by Nancy Bobofit, Percy stands up for Grover, saying “I’m going to kill her.” even when he is already on the edge of getting expelled from Yancy Academy. In the Newsela article, the author states that “Friendship bonds can help reduce stress, increase happiness and bolster self-confidence.” This means that Percy and Grover’s friendship contribute to a happy and healthy lifeWhen Percy finds out that Grover was actually a satyr, he wonders if Grover was faking being his best friend. “But I wasn’t faking being your friend”, he added hastily. “I am your friend.” (page 44) According to an article published by the University of Minnesota, “Healthy relationships are a vital component of health and wellbeing.” Having strong relationships can also fight off depression and avoid a common virus. When Percy is experiencing stress, he can talk or go and hang out with his best friend, Grover. “Friends are like families, and they may be better than real ones.”

Young adults with ADHD struggle in school, but have you ever wondered what their study habits are likeWhen Percy tries to concentrate and study for the Latin test, he gets frustrated and throws the Cambridge Guide to Greek Mythology across his dorm room. “There was no way I was going to remember the difference between Chiron and Charon, or Polydictes and Polydeuces. And conjugating those Latin verbs? Forget it.” (page 18) The ADHD article shows that children with ADHD are often “Avoiding activities that require focus.”  Percy’s grades are slipping from Ds to Fs, and he is really stressed out. “Finally, when our English teacher, Mr. Nicoll, asked me for the millionth time why I was too lazy to study for spelling tests, I snapped.” (page 17) Percy was too lazy to study for spelling tests because he is avoiding activities that require focus. Later, Percy called Mr. Nicoll an “old sot”. This is also a symptom of ADHD because Percy is blurting things out in class. According to the Newsela article, “They might be very focused when something interests them.” People with ADHD are distracted easily, but they can concentrate very well when something interests them. Percy likes Latin class because Mr. Brunner’s classes are always interesting and fun. Linking ‘boring’ activities with Latin can increase Percy’s interests. ADHD isn’t as bad as you think. Sometimes, it can actually benefit some people.

While Percy Jackson deals with ADHD, he is also finding more strong relationships on the way. Positive relationships can affect our health, and symptoms of ADHD can affect our study habits. When Percy struggles at Yancy Academy, Grover helps and supports him. This shows that schoolwork and friendship are an important part of everyone’s life and well-being.

Our Stories make History – Final Project

Collage

For “Our Stories make History” , I created a scrapbook that represents my emotions and creativity during COVID-19 for our final project. The goal is to create multiple primary sources during the pandemic that can be later shared with others.

I organized my project on big poster paper. Since I created most of my sources on paper, I decided to make a scrapbook. I think it might be cool for people in the future to actually see a real book in their hands, instead of on a computer.

I think this primary source can be useful to a historian because it helps them to better understand the feeling  of being stuck in home in COVID-19. They will understand how important it is to entertain yourself and wear masks. Also, some 6 graders might connect my source with their own experiences if they also experience another pandemic.

Being able to enjoy the final published piece made me felt very proud. I also had lots of fun creating new sources. During the progress of this project, I learnt about confirmation bias and fake news, which can help me ‘separate’ real news articles/sources.

Some things that were challenging in this project might include the internet being slow and running out of creativity. Also, it was quite difficult to express very complicated emotions on paper.

I hope you enjoy!
