G9 Engineering Project: Reflect and Share

Here is the final product of the project: (Here’s the Video)

After making some changes, the water fountain met its requirement by forcing the water to flow upwards through the pipe, resulting in a falling water effect. The energy in the water fountain was transferred from electrical energy to gravitational potential energy, and then to kinetic energy. To begin, the water pump required electrical energy to start, pushing the water to a higher position and creating gravitational potential energy. Finally, it fell back to a lower position with kinetic energy. I chose the water fountain because it can help solve many problems and useful to users. For example, the sound of a water fountain can reduce stress, create a calming atmosphere, and provide an chance to study how water flows in a fountain.

In my experience, it is relatively easy to construct the fountain as a whole.  However, mastering the details of it, is more difficult than expected. Many factors can affect the fountain construction process, such as the position of the water flow onto the lid, the angle of the plastic lid, and the power of the water pump.

The first issue was the direction of the water flow, which needed to be adjusted to make it flow onto the lid instead of away from the fountain.

The second issue was the angle of the plastic lid, which was causing an imbalance in the water flow.

Lastly, the power of the water pump needed to be regulated in order to prevent water from splashing away from the fountain.

If I could have a chance to make a water fountain again, there are things I would change for:

  • The height of the PVC Pipe
  • The length between each plastic lids
  • Stable the plastic lids with chopsticks

G9 engineering project: Create & Improve

Material List:

100 cm PVC tube x1

PVC tube lid x1

Plastic container lid x4 (small to large)

PET Plastic bowl x1

15 W Submersible Water pump x1

Tools and Techniques:

Glue gun (Gluing)

Soldering Iron (Soldering)

Drill (Drilling)

On the first day of constructing the product, I gathered five materials (4 plastic lids, a PVC pipe). Then I soldered holes in the plastic lid and PVC pipe and soldered the bigger openings in the plastic cover. Initially, I had planned to solder the smaller holes in the plastic lid. Nevertheless, soldering an excessive amount of plastic would release hazardous gas which would be detrimental to my health, so I changed up my plan and used a drill to make the small holes instead. After that, I attached the plastic lids to the pipe to complete the look of the water fountain.

On the second day, I attached the pipe to the plastic bowl with a 15 W Submersible Water pump, which finishes the product.

On the second day, I secured the pipe to the plastic bowl with a 15 W Submersible Water pump, which completed the product. However, when I tested the fountain, the holes on the pipe were too high, resulting in the water splashing out of the fountain. To fix this, I taped up the existing holes and began drilling new ones at a lower position.

G9 engineering project: Develop and Plan

Develop and Plan

In order to design a fountain that is functional, aesthetic themed, and environmentally friendly. I have brainstormed some words and watched some videos that fit with the ideas of my design.

Form: Water fountain

Functions: Comfort

Ideas: Appearance, Nature, Wellbeing

Medium: Plastic, PVC tube

After brainstorming the ideas, I will start sketching some appearance designs that satisfies with the words.
Here is the of it:

Here is a rough sketch of it:

Later I sketched an advanced design that included the length, and specific materials.

Here is a final sketch of it:

Timeline:

On February 17th, complete work on Blog Post #1 and begin brainstorming ideas and designing for Blog Post #2.

On February 21st, finish collecting ideas and start sketching out the initial product for Blog Post #2.

On February 23rd, finish Blog Post #3 and start gathering resources.

On February 27th, wrap up the resource collection and start putting them together.

On March 1st, start testing the product and making changes as necessary.

G9 engineering project: Define and Inquire

Define and Inquire
For the G9 engineering project, we needed to design a product that is an energy-transfer device.

Design Ideas:

Name: Electric Table Fan

Difficulty: 2/5

Pros:

Easy to gather materials

Easy to make

Energy-Efficient

Cons: Not be able to train variants of other different skills

Name: Solar Powered Toy Car

Difficulty: 3/5

Pros:

More related to man-made structures (Solar power)

Kids Friendly

Easy to make

Cons: Same thing, not being able to train variants of other different other advanced skills.

Name: Water fountain

Difficulty: 5/5

Pros:

Able to train advanced skills (soldering, drilling, gluing)

More variants for the appearance design

Improve air humidity

Cons:

Challenging to make

Hard to gather materials (water pump & PVC pipe)

Final Idea:

I have decided to design a water fountain with a water pump and PVC pipe.

Capstone Film

Plastic Pollution is one of the most pressing global issues in the world, you used as much plastic as you ever expected even in one day, plastic also affects different pollution like ocean and land. To prevent these things happen, stop using disposable plastic

Capstone Project

My capstone project’s topic is plastic pollution. It is a global issue that is made up by only one material, it causes many inconvenient, direct, deadly effects on wildlife and even more. It spreads like a disease without a cure. So that it can be stopped as soon as possible, each of us should realize the harmful effects it has on our lives.

French Revolution Journal

In my opinion, French Revolution was a very worthful revolution. In the pre-revolutionary time, there was an unfair system and most people’s lives were tortured and harsh. In order not to sustain the system, they all created a rebellion to overthrow the old French Government and create the Republic of France. Compare to before and now the French people have a more free-living now, so it was worth indeed.

French Revolution in Plain English

French Revolution is a social uprising against the absolute monarchy from 1789-1799, which created the republic of France. There are many violent, aggressive, and bloody events that you can’t imagine.  Not only that, one of the famous military leaders Napoleon is also in the revolution, click the video if you want to know more about it!

Shackles From The Deep

The book I read was called Shackles From The Deep, it is an adventure journal made by Micheal H. Cottman.  The story is about how deep-sea divers discover a 17th Century slave ship called Henrietta Marie. Micheal and his research team started to research the ship and found out how slavery was very major discrimination in the past. While they were researching, Micheal went to many different places to find more information and started to find out that most of the slaves were Africans, and their environment was very harsh and tortured.

After watching this book I have learned more about slavery, discrimination, and racism in the past.  We should be friendly in order not to cause these things to happen again at present.

Book Talk: Ghost

This book’s theme is Deal with your past and present, be hopeful for your future.
