How the Cuban Revolution Escalated-Brian Huang

The Image above is a portrait of Che Guevara, a famous revolutionary in the cuban revolution. He was communist revolutionary fighting to bring equality to the general public. He worked with Fidel Castro in the Cuban revolution to use Guerrilla warfare tactics against Batista’s army.

I created this video along with my friends, Jonathan and Timothy. Our goal was to create a video to explain the cuban revolution in a simple manner that anyone can understand. We sampled videos from “Common Craft” which is a group that makes similar videos explaining complex topics. We used cut-outs and drawings to help the audience picture the events. The cuban revolution was fought by Batista, Cuba’s dictator, and the M-26-7 rebellion led by Fidel Castro. The main goal of the rebellion was to bring socialism and reform Cuba. Castro, the leader of the rebellion, claims that he is fighting to maintain the rights of Cuban people. At the time, Cuba was a corrupted country when Batista used a military coup to become dictator.

“Ten Days a Madwomen” by Deborah Noyes, Central Ideas and Theme

The book, “Ten Days a Madwomen” by Deborah Noyes, is a biography of Nellie Bly. In the book, the author tells the story of when Nellie Bly went undercover in 1887 to investigate an insane asylum. Nellie Bly was a female reporter working in New York in the late 19th century. Due to sexism, Nellie was getting paid less than men, despite doing the same job. She was struggling with her financial situation, so she decided to go undercover to investigate Blackwell Island’s Lunatic Asylum that had a notorious reputation. She spent 10 days inside this asylum and discovered the dark reality to how the patients were treated at this place. Over the course of reading this book, I started to analyze the theme and central idea.  I came up with 2 central ideas: society mistreats the minorities by race, sex and their attributes by suppressing and abasing them; mentally ill patients should be treated better by the asylums when they are being tortured.

Firstly, I analyzed the cause and effects I found in the story to the find some central ideas and themes.

After that, I brainstormed the possible themes for this book. I listed some evidence to support each of my themes. I also provided reasoning for why I chose the themes.

My First Them

I came up with my themes by choosing the best themes from the list I made. The one I chose here was society mistreats the minorities by race, sex and their attributes. The minorities are suppressed and abased by the society.

I also corrected some words that may be hard to read

My 2nd Theme

My second theme that I chose is Blackwell Island was built to treat insane patients; however, the patients are not being helped. Mentally ill patients should be treated better by the asylums when they are being tortured.

Dear Martin-Book Talk

My name is Brian. This is a book talk on the book “Dear Martin” by Nic Stone. This book was a very fun book for me and i would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about real-world issues such as racism. This book is fast paced and suspenseful. I guarantee it will keep you entertained through out the book. This book gives the first person perspective of an African American experiencing racial inequality.

Growing up- Found Poem

“The Last kiss” by Ralph Fletcher

The external conflict in the story “The Last Kiss” by Ralph Fetcher is between the child and the dad. In the story, the child wants a kiss from his dad, but his dad refuses to kiss him. The child tries to get a kiss from his dad by saying “it’s bed time”, and hoping that he gets kissed. After that, the child waited patiently for the dad to kiss him, instead the dad “turned way”. The child understood that he was “too old to be kissed”, and learned he needs to grow up. This is an external conflict because the child is trying to get a kiss from his dad that’s refusing to kiss him. The conflict is between two characters therefore it is an external conflict. In my found poem, I decided to use a picture showing a person growing up enable to show that the main character is growing up and going through a change. I also used another picture to represent that he changed at the end of the story. In addition, I highlighted important words that describe the conflict red.

Sewable Electronics Project-Circuit

The Planning

My Original Plan:

My original plan was to make a roulette game where you bet on a number from 1 to 5, and if you get the same number you bet on after spinning the wheel you win. My design also had 2 LEDs that indicated if you win or lose. The background was a 12 by 6 cm felt. Afterwards, I had to change the background to 15 by 10 cm because my design could not fit in the first design. I also had to change the pins that were attached to the LED because the circuit playground express was sewn in the wrong direction

After That This was My New Design:

The Process

Step 1: sewing

I sewn The LEDs to the corresponding pin, and it works. It took around 2 classes or 150 minutes. Sewing wasn’t as hard for me compared to the first project.

Step 2: Coding

The Coding was easy for me; I was able to finish it in less than 40 minutes. I set 2 variables in my code named  win number and pick number. Pick number is the number you pick. Win number is automatically chosen for you. If you get the same pick number as win number, you win, and the lights turn green

The Final Product

Over the course, I learned to sew better. I was able to sew more efficiently, and I didn’t get frustrated when I made a mistake. I would say that everything went well for me this time for sewing. I’m glad that I was able finish it on time. If I will do this project again, next time I would try to design the game so it’s more visually appealing.

My Prototype for the bookmark

This is my final product

This is the back of my final product

In my design, I designed a bookmark with a picture of an UFO. I chose this design because I wanted to make something simple thats also useful. I came up with 3 designs for a bookmark, but I chose this design over the other 2. Since we only had  only 2 weeks to complete the project. I chose this design because it was the most appropriate for the time that we had.  I’m proud that I was able to finish this project. I’ve had trouble sewing, for I had a lack of patience. I get frustrated  when the thread comes off the needle. I’m glad that I was able to finish this project.

Sewing was new to me at first. I didn’t know how to sew, and I’ve never sewed before. It was challenging for me at first since it was new to me, and it required patience.  I would also get frustrated when I do something wrong. After practicing sewing for a few times, it became easier for me.  However, I am still impatient when it comes to sewing.  I think I need to work on solving this problem. An advise I would give to another student would be to take your time when sewing and do not rush. Over the course, I learned that I should work on improving my patience. It’s a problem I always had with sewing. In the following weeks, I’m looking forward to learning how to code.

Persuasive essay

Should cell phones be allowed in school? This has been a popular topic that educators are arguing about. It seems like a good idea to allow cellphones since it allows students to access various online tools for education. However, cell phones can often have negative impacts on learning. Cell phones can cause health issues, addiction, and distractions therefore it should be banned.

One of the reasons why schools should bad cell phones is screen time. Using electronic devices for a long period of time can lead to various health issues. One of the most common diseases is caused by Screen Time is computer vision syndrome(CVS). Over 60 million people are suffering from CVS. Another common effect of screen time is eye fatigue. Staring at computer screens causes your eyes to focus harder resulting in blinking less. This may cause blurred vision. To prevent these health issues we should bad cell phones.

Another reason why cell phones should be bad during school is addiction. Two out of every three people are addicted to cell phones. In average American spends two hours and 51 minutes on their phones daily which is around the duration of a flight from Miami to New York.

By banning cell phones we can prevent students from being addicted to cell phones.

All those cell phones can help students access online tools and benefit learning, students can use them for non-academic purposes. Cell phones can often become a distraction for students. Since students often use their cell phones inappropriately during class schools had to confiscate hundreds of phones each year to see better results on tests. In a recent college study, over 92% of students in a university have admitted to using cellphones classes. Turns out many students had nomophobia which makes them afraid of being afraid without a cellphone. People that had nomophobia are constantly worried about missing text messages or emails. We can easily prevent students from using their phones inappropriately during class by banning cellphones.

Cell phones should be banned from schools because it causes health issues addiction and distraction. By banning cellphones we can prevent these problems.
