The main character in Evan Hunter’s short story entitled “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” initially believes the importance and pride of being part of “the Royals,” but later understands the significance of himself as “Andy” not a “Royal.” His changing understanding is revealed through uses of 3rd person omniscient point of view, symbols, and actions. On page 22, it states, “Even in his pain, there had been some sort of pride in knowing he was a Royal. Now there was no pride at all. With the rain beginning to chill him, with the blood pouring steadily between his fingers, he knew only a sort of diziness. He could only think: I want to be Andy.” The 3rd person omniscient view clearly tells us Andy’s shift in mood from being proud as a Royal to a regret. Furthermore, it states, “the knife hated only the purple jacket. The jacket was as stupid meaningless thing that was robbing him of his life.” The most consequential symbol in this story was the purple jacket which represented “the royals,” and Andy had always been proud of it. However, after being stabbed, his actions contrastingly altered. Lastly, on page 22, it states, “With great effort, he rolled over into his back. He felt the pain tearing at his stomach when he moved, If he never did another thing, he wanted to take off the jacket.” Andy attempting to take off his purple jacket exhibits him not wanting to be part of Royal because the purple jacket was a great symbol of “the Royals.”
