Science Design String Launcher Post 4

The basics of our String launcher work, however, the problem is that any type of string or rope inserted through the wheels stops the motors from spinning, it is because the resistance is too low. This problem is beyond our ability so we really do nothing since it is how the motor works, not how we created and designed it. However, I feel like we did a rather good job in this project, we were able to think, plan, then create. We were able to use a lot of tools to help us in our future school work or perhaps jobs. I feel like we could improve the safety of our product because all our batteries and wires are outside, it might be dangerous if it touches something and flames, therefore, we could cover it up with more pieces of wood. Since there are batteries needed, we could replace this with a charger so it is reusable. The potential customer if the product had worked would have been fascinated by this product, and who are. Our product could be used to create future scientists and help them expand it to different scientific toys.

I was absent for a few lessons but our main issue was if we connect two motors to one battery pack, there must be two negative circuits to connect to each motor, however, the battery pack only had one.

Mr. Hussack helped us build a small prototype of the circuit to test if the circuit would actually work, and the concept was plausible with the materials provided. After Mr. Hussacks’ help, we were able to move on with the project.

However, there was a little mistake where we messed up the calculations for our wood piece, we were stuck because the two holes for the wheels were too close together. Next, we thought about a better idea, of creating a thicker handle so it’s easier to hold, therefore this mistake helped us in some way.

While we finished the basic parts, there was a problem with drilling. it was extremely hard to drill a hole right in the middle of a small piece of wood, but the design teachers helped us and we were able to learn how to drill these holes much easier.

Next, we had to solder the circuits together to ensure that they are secure and electricity could flow through.

Then, after the soldering part, we managed to make it work. Next, we focused on the decorations of the product, because the handle (made from wood) was quite pricking our hand, we sanded the outer parts to make it easier to hold.

Develop and Planning

The initial sketch for the string launcher is shown above, we figured out how to build the mechanics through a DIY video discovered on Youtube. The build required techniques such as soldering, drilling, and laser cutting, and a proper understanding of circuits as we needed to connect two motors to just one battery pack, the motors also spun in different directions depending on which side was positive and negative. I already knew soldering from a circuits class in seventh grade, and laser cutting I could learn by asking one of the design teachers that worked with us during the project.

To get started, we finalized the materials first:
1 Fret saw
2 3 Volt DC Motor
1 drill
2 Battery
1 Thermal glue gun
1 glue
1 Micro Switch
2 Toy car tire
1 Soldering tools
1 Shaped wire
1 Yarn (6 meters) 1
After finalizing the materials, we decided to make them easier to use and more comfortable to use. We needed a variety of techniques to complete our projects, such as drilling, laser cutting, and Soldering. We also cut out a piece of wood as the handle of our string launcher to make it more comfortable. Drilling was one of the hard parts since we had to drill super small holes right in the middle, during this project, I feel much more confident drilling holes in the center. Soldering and Laser cutting was a skill I’ve already learned during the past few years of school.

What is this engineering task?

We had to create a product based on one of the four criteria: a toy that converts energy, a device that is safe and sustainable? A device that transfers power, but appealing at the same time.

I was thinking about a couple of ideas, for example, an electrical nerf gun, or a toy car, but as I scroll through youtube, something caught my eye, it was a string launcher. It was unique, appealing, and fit the criteria.

Target

I’ve found the string launcher to be a fascinating project. I’ve found some pros and cons about the product. Firstly, it is a very unique project, therefore, there are very few videos and explanations made. However, Isb does have all the materials required so it is possible. The process isn’t really hard, however, the measurements have to be measured precisely. Also, the String launcher matches all the criteria, my main audience will be students who are interested in something new to play with, different from the toys they normally play with.

Gavin and I created a video to raise awareness of Ocean Plastic pollution, we did research and wrote down the seriousness of the question and how we can slow down this process as a individual.

Capstone Project- Ocean Plastic Pollution’s impact on earth and solutions

The current unit covers issues that are with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) developed by the United Nations. The goal is believed that they will be done by 2030. If we are trying to fix these problems we would have to be aware of these issues and solve them. I am currently researching Ocean Plastic Pollution, which is closely related to goals #3 #6 #11 #12 #14 #15

Fighting for Tierra Y Libertad

As Antonio’s father died when he was three years old, he was brought up by his mother and his brother. Antonio was a young teenage boy who lived in a poor family, they couldn’t eat three meals a day. After growing up, Antonio becomes a Potato farmer but in 1910 as the peasants in Mexico began a rebellion against Diaz, he joined the army too.

In Conclusion, I believe the revolution was worth it. Firstly, the revolution’s point can be concluded with two words, Liberty and Land Reform. The revolution was for freedom of the Mexicans from Diaz, a dictator who focused on helping rich people getting richer, rather than helping peasants. But what Diaz doesn’t know is, Over 90% of the country are Peasants. Therefore, there was a rebellion led by Madero that happened in 1910. The second was land reform for the peasants. Land reform were the land that was originally from Peasants. Down below is my Microsoft Sway of my journal it talks about a life of a Mexican during the Mexico Revolution. After Obregon taking over Mexican, Mexico finally begins to go on the right path. Obregon promoted public education and industrial growth. The peasants also got their land back, isn’t that what the revolution was for?

Land and Liberty

In this revolution unit, I chose the Mexican Revolution because i don’t know too much about the Mexican revolution and i was pretty eager to learn something i didn’t know since i’ve studied about revolutions in France and United States. Our task was to create a video similar to the format in Plain English, I worked with Sophie and Mia and we explained some of the main events in the Mexican Revolution, such as the different presidents that were elected and the major plans created. Overall, we believe we did a pretty good job, we had each of the video with each person reading it connected greatly, The audio matched the video and we added background music, which made it even more attracting and interesting.

10 Days a Mad Woman Nellie Bly A Woman Journalist

I would like to introduce the story “10 Days a Mad Woman” It was written by Deborah Noyes.  I believe the theme and ideas were reflects how the society treats women and mentally ill patients. How the hospitals treated patients with horrific treatments and how woman journalists were treated differently.

10 DAYS A MADWOMAN

This book was published by Deborah Noyes on February 23rd 2016. It introduces about a women named Nellie Bly. Nellie Bly had goals of becoming a women journalist, there were only few female journalists at the time. But Nellie Bly from Pittsburgh, knew she was going to pull a major news that will skyrocket her to fame: She pretended to be Insane and was sent to Blackwell’s island, there were torture and horrific treatment towards the patients in the hospital and she doesn’t know what was waiting for her…Nellie managed to escape after and exposed their shocking treatments and it made her even more famous.Nellie then circled the globe in a record seventy-two days and brought home a pet monkey. She then married a millionaire and ran his company after his husband died

As i read through the book i found some central ideas in the book. Firstly, the society treats people differently because of their sex, their race or who they are, such as sexually and their personality. It is shown in some quotes below i showed in my evidence. Secondly, the society treats mentally ill patients differently, and i believed the government could’ve took more attention on those hospitals.

The following brainstorm is a complex version of my first central idea, How the society treats people differently because of there sex, their race or who they are. Women face discrimination because people often have a tradition view, they believe that they should stay at home doing chores and takes care of the kids, and when women comes out to work, they believe they can’t doing anything better than men only because of their gender.

The next brainstorm is about my second central idea, How mentally ill patients were treated differently. from the quotes in the book such as “an insane place you’ll never get out.” Even if you’re cured, they wouldn’t let you out. The reason might be they didn’t want people to know how they treated the patients. The government could’ve payed much more attention to those hospitals. If they did, there is a high chance that the patients won’t be receiving horrific treatments.

In conclusion,  “Ten Days a Madwoman” is a story about a female reporter facing discrimination even in big cities like New York. The main themes were sexism and terrible treatment to the mentally ill patients. Overall I  recommend this book to people who has the same age as me of higher. It not only a book about the success of Nellie Bly exposing the hospital and how she overcame discrimination of women. With 10 as the highest score, it would be a 7-8.
