Found poem By Arthur Li
This found poem is based on “Lamb to the slaughter“, a short story written by Roald Dahl, about a mentally unstable wife of a detective that kills her husband with a piece of lamb leg after he tells her something unrevealed to the reader, and what she does to escape from the law. The reason I chose gluttony as a title signifies the reason how the weapon was disposed of; Eating.
The main purpose of this poem is to hopefully explain the conflict and story of Lamb to the slaughter, which I think could be either Character vs Character, or Character vs society. Both mainly being External conflict.
However I Feel like the overarching conflict would be Character vs society, and that the Characters in this story that appeals to Mary as an antagonist is merely a catalyst for the story, which is in my opinion Integral in a Character Vs Society story. In this book, the two main catalysts being Mary’s husband and the police officers. On paragraph 16 Page 3, The husband Angers Mary by telling her some news that angers her, which causes the kill to take place, but the story is not over. This merely sparks a bigger problem for herself. She must escape from society and law as a whole, as even if she was executed, she is uncertain if her unborn child would die with her. She is not willing to risk it, and must trick the police members into helping her later on in the story.
This can be proven via “She began thinking very fast. As the wife of a detective, she knew quite well what the penalty would be.” “What were the laws about murderers with unborn children?” “Did they kill them both — mother and child? Or did the wait until the tenth month? What did they do?
Now relating this to the found poem, the upper half was mainly used to explain how Mary decided to kill her husband, (From “Smiling air” to “Reject it all”) and the growing conflict that gets worse until Mary goes completely insane as seen by the rapidly repeating phrases of “don’t want it”.
Then comes Nausea, and then a leg of lamb. The weapon of murder.
This marks the end of the first half of the poem, which then Mary begins to think about the consequences Following “Laws. Penalty. What did they do?” This Signals that “they” aren’t just merely police officers who come into her house, it was the justice system as a whole. She then manifests her plan, begins acting (“Acting, That was better”), creating an alibi(“which grocer?”), and finally reporting the murder to the police(Dead!). Mary then proceeds to infamously dispose the weapon when the police “does a favor” And eats the meat.
Finally, the poem ends off with “Mary Maloney began to giggle.” With a full stop to signal that her plan has been successfully concluded. Also, An easter egg in the poem is that I have hidden multiple “they”s to show how she did not escape the execution just yet, as society and justice is everywhere around you.
For the visuals of the poem, I tried to stick to a house-ish aesthetic which mainly composed out of a window, with fonts being Times new roman as in my memory, seems like a font one would find on a newspaper about something serious in the 60s. Aside from this, I chose a window as it is simplistic, Not too flashy, and also had white space where I could hide My “They”s as a small little easter egg to back up my claim.
This concludes my Found poem and what type of conflict this is. Thank you for reading and have a nice day.
