When we were thinking about what product are we making, I remembered a youtube video I watched before. It was about a drawer hidden in a drawer. I thought it was interesting and decided to make a box with a secret drawer. It was basically a simplified version of what I saw in that video.
It is a 45cm*25cm rectangular box, it had to be this big since the drawer inside it needed to be big enough to put things in it. There is a button that blends in with the surrounding decorations on the box, which should push the drawer out when pushed. Just put it back in place, and the button should pop back out. The drawer looks a bit obvious, but what can they do when they couldn’t get it out anyways? I am not very sure if it would work out well, but it looks like it would, and I am happy with it. It has a lid which fit really well on it, and a decoration on top that says “Box” and my name.
This is a photo of my design in fusion. There would be some little adjustments soon, but this is generally what it looks like.
This is the photo of my first version and plan for this project. It looks a bit different from what I have now, I made some adjustments along the way. For example, I changed the placement of the drawer and decoration. I decided to change the placement because I think it looks better and more natural.
This is my second plan. And as you can see, it’s still a bit different from the version I’m at now.
It was a hard project. It would have three different thicknesses of wood and about 30 pieces in total, if I get to finish it. I have got to the cardboard prototype stage, and I’m planning to continue even after it is graded. Some of the pieces are miss-cut though. Luckily, there weren’t any fatal errors in any of the pieces, and the prototype was working pretty well. Most of the pieces fit together, and there are just several small things to adjust.
This is my cardboard prototype, and as you might have noticed, the lid fits pretty well on the body. I used tape to put them together. The insides mechanisms are a bit of a mess though, because the cardboard thickness was wrong, and things just didn’t work that great. But in general, it was pretty successful.
When I was doing the paper prototype, I got very frustrated about the position of a decoration (“Just a Box”, the button is the o)that hides the button. I did think of giving up and changing the project midway, but making a new one would probably take even more time. Also, if I gave up, then all my previous work would be nothing. And now I’m glad that I didn’t give up.
Overall, I think the outcome is great and it was worth the time.
